Google Launches Developer’s Preview of Android Things Accelerating IoT Development

Internet of Things is one of the fast-emerging technologies in the digitally disrupted era that enterprises are residing in. The rising number of connected devices, and the predicted increase in the number of connected devices and the revenue generated therein by 2020 is enough to say how IoT will redefine the way businesses interact, and innovate. Not only will it bring everything to you in real-time, but will also help accelerate decision making, and increase productivity and efficiency. The idea is to incorporate IoT to induce higher growth, close the gaps, and make businesses more profitable.

In line with this futuristic view, Google recently announced the launch of the developer’s preview for Android Things, the platform that will help in accelerating IoT development. With this preview launch, the developers will be empowered with Google, and can innovate Android and incorporate it in various devices to offer a more connected world.

Android Things is a complete platform that will allow developers to design and develop new IoT based applications, wherein Android would be the starting point for development. The idea is to help developers build IoT devices using Android, and create a strong base for the connected world.

The learning curve will be small for those who are adept with Android, as it uses similar APIs, tools, and the SDK kit for this new layer is pretty familiar. It will use IoT specific tools and API as well as Google Play services and the Google cloud platform to initiate developers.

Learn how Android Things differs from Brillo

Google will keep updating this platform so as to keep the developers engaged and productive. It will keep adding new features, OS patches, security fixes etc. based on the feedback received from the initial launch. The collaboration of Intel Edison, NXP Pico and Raspberry Pi 3 has helped build the hardware support for this new platform.

Brillo is slightly different from Android Things as it is a lightweight version of Android meant for the developers. Brillo could not help with full-fledged development of smart devices as that required complete Android experience and significant understanding of the features. The real requirement for a developer’s preview was to check for the security, which has been augmented in this new platform. Few functions such as notifications and support for gaming have been omitted in this new OS for smart devices. The newly updated Weave platform has been initiated for Android Things as it allows you to connect to the cloud and interact with other Google services with ease.

Moving Ahead with Silver Touch

To leverage Android Things, you need to partner with a company that has expertise in Android, understands Internet of Things and possesses the know-how of your industry. We have offered exquisite IoT solutions that have leveraged the capabilities of the connected world, and augmented the user experience.

One of the finest IoT applications that we have produced would be the automated driving test track that we devised for Commissioner of Transport, Government of Gujarat, India. In this solution, we connected the different devices over a network enabling easy data capture, and then allowed data processing to generate the driving results accurately. The idea was to automate the process, and make data gathering, storing and processing easy and result generation quick. The transparency was enhanced in the system, and left no room for error.
