Joomla 3.4 has Come Out with Some Noteworthy Features
Joomla team recently introduced the latest 3.4 version of Joomla 3.x release series, which includes many new features. Regular updates ensure continuous development and use of the latest technology in this CMS. There are new features for both end-users and developers introduced in this release. Here’s a rundown of the key features of Joomla 3.4:
Front-End Module EditingIn the earlier versions whenever you wanted to edit the modules, while being logged in on the front-end, you were directed to the configuration page in the back-end. This has been changed in Joomla 3.4, where you will be able to edit pages faster and easily without using the admin dashboard. This feature simplifies editing the websites and also helps you to limit the administrator access for the users who only require access to module configuration.
Removal of WeblinksTo lighten the Joomla package and making Joomla more user-friendly, com_weblinks have been removed from the core and moved to the Joomla Extensions Directory (JED) as these weblinks were not much used by an average user. Within the Joomla Extension Directory, a new category for extensions marked as core-supported will be created. However if you already have weblinks installed in your website, they will continue to work and won’t be taken out. For future use, you will be able to install them like normal extension from JED.
Composer IntegrationThis feature will not attract a normal Joomla user as it is beneficial to the developers. Composer is very popular among the PHP developers as it is a package manager for PHP. It is used for dependency management. The purpose of introducing this composer in Joomla 3.4 is to easily manage external dependencies in Joomla core as well as extensions, e.g. Joomla Framework and PHPMailer.
No Captcha Feature of reCAPTCHA IntroducedreCAPTCHA tool is widely used to stop spam in websites, stopping you to post comments or submit an online form before entering illegible numbers or text written in a box. In 2014, Google introduced No Captcha, which eases this task and allows authenticating your identity as a human by just a single click. No need to solve the puzzle and waste your time, a single click will confirm that you are not a robot. This No Captcha feature has been introduced in Joomla 3.4, to give an enhanced users’ experience.
Core en-GB StandardizationeN-GB is Joomla’s official language and this feature aims to standardize all the core Joomla language strings in en-GB. It has been introduced to maintain consistency and balance throughout Joomla and will provide easy framework and guidelines for comfortable translation and help in expansion across various languages.
Upload Shield ImplementationUpload Shield code has been implemented in Joomla 3.4, which helps to detect and protect against malicious upload of files by checking their filenames and file contents. This has thus provided an extra layer of security against malicious activities.
Options to Choose Between Beta and Stable VersionsEarlier Joomla core allowed only users to select whether they wished to update to beta version or stable version, beta version being there for testing. However, Joomla 3.4 now allows even extension developers to do the same for their extensions.
Other New Features in Joomla 3.4
- Admin panel sidebar can be toggled, allowing you to show or hide it.
- In Media Manager, the path to the opened folder will be displayed.
- A new updated .htaccess file will be added to the new Joomla installation, enhancing the security by prohibiting directory listings.
