Software To Create A Website

Thursday, June 19th, 2008

By: Richard Adams

There is an ever growing list of software to create a website and the challenge is working out which is best for your needs.

They range from the super cheap and super simple up to the top end where you will spend several hundred dollars on a complicated yet very powerful piece of software to create a website.

Having been building websites for over a decde now, I’m going to take a look at some of these pieces of software to enable you to have a better idea of the best solution for you.

1) NVU

Nvu is freeware - which means you can download it safely and legally off the internet without paying a penny making this the cheapest software to create a website (though there are a few other free options we will be discussing here).

Nvu has proven very popular because whilst free it is quite a powerful piece of software and the learning curve going from never having used it before to creating quite a nice website is quite short.

2) FrontPage

FrontPage is Microsoft’s attenpt at web design software and whilst it can be simple to use and comes with a range of features to make attractuve (if basic) websites, you must have a special web host in order to use this software.

In that way, while some people swear by it, others still try to avoid this software to create a website wherever possible as it limits your options when it comes to your web hosting account.

3) Dreamweaver

Dreamwevaer is the top of the range option as used by professional web designers the world over. I have to admit that I myself have a copy of this software and it is *amazing* to use. It’s a case of being to do pretty much anything you like without limitations. You come up with a concept and next thing you know you’re making it a reality.

On the flipside, even as an experienced web designer I found it quite a challenge to get comfortable using, and for the average website you may well be paying for features you never use.

So unless you’re looking for software to build a website of the very highest quality I would consider the other options first.

4) Site Build It

Site Build It is a package deal of software and services which icnludes not just the facility to create a website but also to register a website address, make a logo, insert forms and sell products.

It is an ideal beginners solution as it offers everything you need in one handy place together with plenty of handy tutorials in video and text format to help teahc you everything you need to know.

However, as your skills and experience grow, you may find the limitations of this system too great as you try to add extra features just not allowed with Site Build It. It’s also one of the most expensive options going.

5) Joomla

Joomla is just one example of what is known as Content Management Software for CMS. Generally this software to create a website is used in addition to one of the other pieces of software here like Front Page.

Pleasantly Joomla is free software and controls how your website functions. So you can use your other web design software to make an attractive template so your site *looks* how you want (or just download one of the free templates for Joomla) then use Joomla to make your site *do* what you want it to.

Joomla makes it reasonably easy to add advanced features like discussion forums, link directories, guest books and contact forms to your site with little technical knowledge. You can even automatically translate your website into dozens of other languages!

6) Blogger

The last piece of software to create a website that I want to look at today is Blogger, a free service from Google.

Blogger let’s you choose from a range of different templates and sets you up with a free blog. You can go to nothing to having your own blog in a matter of minutes so it’s another free, beginner option to consider.

A Discussion on Website Development

Friday, June 13th, 2008

By: Mahoney

Websites have now become an important representative of your company’s corporate identity and it plays an important role in cutting a deep impression among the visitors. For this reasons website development has become extremely important. The needs of the audiences should be given special attention in case of website development. Feedbacks also deserve special consideration.

Website development is important for any corporate identity. Websites are used variously to sell products, to offer information about the company, throw light on the sales strategy, marketing strategy, and other promotional strategy. Web presence has become compulsory in today’s competitive world.

When you start developing your website, certain points deserve special attention that can make your website instant hit.

Your website should have a proper theme with a proper look and feel and it should be compact and concise, containing all the necessary information. Creating a website is not a one-time affair. There is a constant requirement for its modifications and developments. Website development should be done keeping in mind that your website should be search engine friendly.

Knowledge: Website development can really take advantage from the knowledge and the skills in different areas. When you decide to develop your website, you can get ideas how to go about it by conducting a research. It is a good idea to notice how other websites have been developed. This would help you learn what the factors that should be highlighted are and what else should be avoided. You can learn from the mistakes that others have done.

Images and Texts: Visitors visit your website for a reason, and that is to know something about it. What the website contains plays a very important role in creating a strong impression on the mind of the visitors. Each of the website templates must contain unique pages, relevant images, and a working navigation. Sometimes they also contain usable text.

Customization: Customize your website keeping in mind the objective of your website. This can be accomplished by adding and changing the images, inserting or deleting the pages, changing navigation labels and introducing links wherever you feel is necessary.

Strategy: For conducting website development successfully, first you have to decide your strategy and the earlier you do it the better. Plan your process well in advance so that you can include everything you should. An efficient plan ensures that your website development is up to the desired level. Your strategy should be based primarily on four factors. First, avoid all information that are superfluous, obsolete, and insignificant and those without any worth. Add information that has the potential to increase the worth of your website.

However, it must be made clear that website development is not a one-time affair. It is a continuous process. With the changing times, your goals change and as such, your website should be modified in accordance with it. Also, the visitors may get bored after a while if they find the same information from a particular website. Websites should be developed to attract new visitors and at the same time retain the older ones.

Website Design for a Professional Website

Friday, June 13th, 2008

By: Rob Bertholf

Website design and website development don’t just involve building websites for the client’s or for your business. Web design calls for something broader and greater. For a professional website there must be a certain degree of professionalism visible on the web pages. This is possible through effective web development and quality website design.

There are essential pre-requisites for the web development process in order that your website looks professional and user friendly.

1. The website must have sufficient quality content that must be appealing. In case you provide links for downloading, the time taken to download must be small and the procedure easy. The web design must ensure that the background, font, etc must be identical for all the web pages. colors used must be matching and visible.

2. Links on your website must function properly and the web development must be done in a manner that the graphics are clear and a sitemap is provided for easy navigation. The graphics must be used judiciously and the loading time must be small at the web development stage.

3. The content of the website must be updated regularly and the keywords must produce magical results. The website design and the presentation of the content must be done in a clear and formatted manner.

4. The web design must carry contact information and must respond to the visitor queries or feedback efficiently. Web design must be accessible from different browsers and free membership is a must at the promotion stage.

5. The website development must encourage visitor movement through the pages of your website with refreshing content, little or no flashes, pop-ups and animations, little registration and clean HTML.

These are the key things to keep in mind before the web design process. Web development must be done in a way that certain things are kept in mind.

Brower (Netscape Navigator, Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer, etc) compatibility is a must for any website

Bullets and numbering blended with animations distract.

Excessive graphics and pop-ups can kill your website

Advertising in excess can lead to a deterioration in quality

Lack of crawler compatibility can harm your SEO

Huge font takes time to adjust with the human eye

Tables and tools must be used effectively

Hence, website development process is indispensable and research must be carried out before finalizing the website design and content. Several times the web design can shoot back to the business if it is not taken care of while web development. Similarly, foreign phrases, heavyweight words, jargons, technical wonders, etc can also kill user interest in your business website. To be professional in your approach, the website design must be simple and the basics must need to be borne in mind.

Only then can your web development strategy create magic. Web design aspects when dealt with professionalism require minimum efforts and maximize your results. This is because sticking to the basics works best in your favour. Hence, website design and web development processes can make or mar your website depending on the professionalism the website development process utilizes.

Important steps to consider before designing website for your business

Friday, June 13th, 2008

By: Peter Arthur

1. THE FOCUS OF THE WEBSITE This is the first thing you want to define clearly before any other step is taken. You need to decide what the main purpose of the website is - what you want to focus on in terms of a subject. It is important that you define this step as clearly as possible because a website’s focus has a major impact on the whole project; this is the ‘foundation’ of the site.
For example:
A web store.
Information hub for established clients.
Branding website.

2. SPECIFIC WEBSITE FEATURES This builds off of the first step, where now you look at actual features that you need to implement. For example:
A shopping cart for an online store
A password protected section of the website
Again, the more detail the better.

3. MAP OUT THE MAJOR SECTIONS OF THE WEBSITE With the first two steps completed, you’re ready to actually start mapping out the major sections of the website; drawing out quick diagrams of the website is a useful way of doing this. A diagram can easily show the hierarchy of a website and how the various sections are related to each other.

4. WRITE OUT YOUR FINAL CONTENT This part is usually left to the end … then people wonder why they have to go back and rethink the structure of the site. All websites are driven by content; it’s the content that makes a site effective and successful. As such, this part of the process is arguably the most important, so you need to pay attention to it.

5. FIND A STYLE / LOOK FOR THE WEBSITE At this stage of the process, you are ready to start looking at the visual aspect of the site – the design. You have a few options: Hire a graphic designer / web designer Come up with your own design – I’m assuming you have some artistic and design experience. Buy yourself a website template and save time and money.

6. BUILD THE WEBSITE Yes, I know it seems impossible but you can finally start building the actual site at this point! With the above questions answered and steps completed, you’ll find the process of building the website (actually writing out the code,) is much easier and you will have reduced the chance of having to go back and redo things.

7. EVALUATE THE WEBSITE, MAKE THE REQUIRED CHANGES / UPDATES Once you’ve built the website, you should walk away from it for a day or two. This will allow you to come back and evaluate it with fresh eyes. It might also be a good idea to get someone who has not worked on the site, to take a look as well. Here are some of the things you should be looking for:
Clean easy to update design/structure.
Good usability in the design - and all that implies.
Fast loading ‘light’ pages.
Intelligent use of technology - using Flash when it makes sense not because you want a ‘cool’ intro! The website’s ability to convey the meaning/message of the website quickly if not instantly.

8. GO LIVE – REGISTER A DOMAIN, FIND A HOST, UPLOAD THE WEBSITE. If you’ve passed steps 1 to 7, you know you’re ready to show the world the website. All that is left to do is go live: Register a domain
Find a hosting company
Upload the website
