Outsourcing web design

Saturday, June 28th, 2008

By: John Danielson

The trend of outsourcing web design, software development and Internet marketing projects or part of IT departments activities gained an extreme popularity in the e-commerce domain - even if you are a small or middle size company you can easily gain benefits outsourcing.Case: A customer want your proposal on a web site development and that’s what you do best - except for an element of the project - you are not proficient in this specific web technology. But this element is required to win this contract. What should you do in this case? A dead end: you can’t lose this contract but its unacceptable for you to hire a new employee. Or another scenario, when you need some programming for your own site but can’t spare any time to it at all. Its best for you to focus on your core competencies that generate revenue for you.So much technology, so much competition.Web development is an immense domain with multiple technologies involved - hardly a small development company is able to encompass everything. However, without qualified designers and developers ensuring omni-faceted expertise, it will be almost impossible for small firms to win contracts due to a lack of required expertise. The very idea of outsourcing projects or project components may be formidable for the bulk of small operators, but consider this opportunity as a ticket to the bright future of your company. What should be outsourced?A small web design and development company can get seasoned in particular areas - and these are your strong suit that should be operated, the rest can be outsourced. How to point out the tight spots in your development processes? If graphics and design for web sites is one of your challenges, then to outsource that work may be the sole way out. But paying $80 per hour to graphic artist is too much taking into account that you charge only $50 an hour, but you should look at it from the other side:Customer wishes a Flash element created and Flash isn’t your shot and you don’t know how long the implementation will take, even approximately, and you have agreed the total project price. You stipulated 6 man-hours for Flash animation - so at a rate of $50 per hour, it will cost you $300 to implement. Even if third party designer charges $80 per hour, it can take him only 2 hours to develop, plus consultation with external designer and total $210. So, you saved almost a hundred dollars and stayed ahead saving time for other projects or elements. If you are dedicated to web design but also responsible for accounting of your business, then you are probably lose your money. Its much cheaper to contract bookkeepers’ services. If you have free time to manage your finances it would be better and more efficient to spend it submitting tenders and marketing your business.

Everything you need to know to find a good shared web host

Friday, June 27th, 2008

A good, shared Web host must provide reliable and reasonable quality of service. Many times, a consumer will sign up with the least expensive provider only to experience many technical difficulties and the inevitable and frustrating experience of changing Web hosts. To avoid this experience, it is best if the consumer chooses the right hosting company. Ensuring that a shared Web hosting firm has the following characteristics will increase the probability of consumer satisfaction.

Quality Server Technology The use of quality server technology is important. Since shared hosting services utilize multiplexed equipment, consumers must ensure that the server and server technology used can accommodate the number of users on your particular server.

System Administrators Make sure that knowledgeable system administrators are operating your hosting company’s technology.

Network Redundancy Your shared hosting package must have multiple connections to the Internet. Network redundancy ensures that if one Internet connection goes down, traffic can be re-routed through another connection.

Network Connectivity It is important to find the fastest Internet connection possible. Since you are competing with other users for resources in a shared hosting environment, you should ensure that you have at least T3 connection that is using less than 50 per cent of available bandwidth.

You should also consider the following factors before selecting any type of shared hosting solution for your Web site. By considering these factors, you will save money in the long run by selecting a solution that grows with your business.

Purchase only what you need Select a Web hosting solution that corresponds with your business needs. Only purchase services that your site will require to provide your specific content. Don’t sign up for an all-inclusive account with a hosting firm if you won’t use most of their services. This will unnecessarily increase your costs.

Select a scalable solution Make sure that your hosting solution can grow as your site grows in complexity. Ensure that you can upgrade your site to accommodate increased bandwidth and other demanding resource requirements such as server-side scripting, database support and multimedia streaming.

Find prompt tech support Only use a host that provides prompt and knowledgeable customer care. A dependable host should offer 24×7 toll-free technical support rendered by experienced and professionally trained technicians.

Check references Before you commit to a particular hosting firm, ask for references. Make sure to canvass other webmasters running sites with similar specifications. Browse their Web sites and measure response times at both peak and non-peak periods.

Watch your billing and keep your receipt Many hosting firms are notorious for their horrid billing practices. Check your credit card statements to ensure that you are not being overcharged or billed at an incorrect frequency. Most purchases occur online, so make sure to print out your receipt. Most companies will require you to remit that receipt by fax in order to cancel.

Back up all your data Do not depend on your host to recover any data you publish on the Web. Most hosting firms are only equipped to recover files in the event of a system failure. Ensure that you have a copy of any data that you post to the Web on your own hard drive.

Own your own domain Make sure that your Web host will not hold you hostage to their service by exercising administrative control over your domain name. Your host should only be listed as a technical contact. You should exercise administrative control over the domain name from the point of purchase.

Do extensive background research Find out whether a host is real or whether it resells hosting solutions. Also check what payment processor the host uses to run credit card transactions. Determine who owns the hosting company and whether they possess the technical expertise required to run it effectively. All of these factors impact upon the credibility and reliability of the host and the services you provide your customers.

Obtain assurances You should obtain assurances concerning service quality before you sign up for hosting services. A quality Web host should assure some form of service quality and compensation if you experience an interruption in service.

Understand your obligations Before you sign up with a Web host, you must understand what your obligations are concerning payment for service and permissible behavior. Certain hosting companies will not permit high traffic content, such as adult material. Other hosting companies will permit such content, but only if a special hosting service package is selected.

Establish an exit strategy Always have a backup plan in case your host goes belly-up or experiences an unrecoverable failure. Redundancy should always be a priority if you are running an Internet-based business. Remember that any service outage can completely compromise your source of income.

Effective Web Site Design Tips

Saturday, June 21st, 2008

By: cawn003

1) Never use splash pages

Splash pages are the pages that comes out first before you see the index page of a website. It usually very attractive image with words like “welcome” or “click here to enter”. Sometimes it is an advertisement, in fact they are just that pretty vases with no definite purpose but gather traffic. Most of the time this is the reason why your visitors clicked the back button! Give them a purpose to stay and go back to your site without the splash page.

2) Avoid using excessive banner advertisements

Even the least net savvy people have trained themselves to ignore banner advertisements so you will be wasting valuable website real estate. Instead, provide more valuable content and weave relevant affiliate links into your content, get the interest of the visitors by show what are really interesting and the benefits of your site then let your them feel that they want to buy instead of being pushed to buy.

3) Have a simple and clear navigation

You need to have a simple and visible navigation menu so that even a young child will know how to use it. Your site should be user-friendly avoid using complicated Flash based menus or multi-tiered dropdown menus. If your visitors get lost and don’t know how to navigate your site, they will get pissed off and go to other site.

4) Provide clear indication of where the user is

When visitors are really interested of browsing your site, you will want to make sure they know which part of the site they are in at that moment. By doing this, you already having their interest, you are putting your visitors to stay longer and browse relevant information or navigate into any section of the site easily. Never confuse your visitors because confusion leads to leaving your site!

5) Do not use audio on your site

If your visitor is going to stay a long time at your site to read your content, you will want to make it sure they are not be disturb by some audio or even vivid colors you provide on your website. If the audio is important to you, just make it sure you provide some controls over it.

Choosing A Content Management System For Your Website

Thursday, June 19th, 2008

By: Kelvin Ho

Currently, there are many content management systems (CMS)out there to help you with your website building. Examples include Wordpress and Joomla. All of them have different strengths and weaknesses. Hence if you are planning to launch a website, it is imperative that you choose the correct CMS. Without the right tool, you are likely to waste much time setting up and maintaining your site in the long run.

So what should you look out for? 1. Ease of Installation
Whichever system you choose, it should always be easy to install. Nowadays, it is usually not a problem as many web hosts are now providing automatic script installers such as Fantastico. These installers usually offer an automatic installation of CMS and with it, you should be able to set up your site within minutes of installation.

2. Ease of Use
The CMS you choose should allow you to quickly and easily build and manage a website. Many web-based open source content management system (CMS) such as Joomla, Plone, Drupal and Wordpress allow you to do just that. In fact, the core purpose of many of these CMS is to allow non-technical individuals to build and organize the content of their website with great ease. Most CMS enable a user to edit the site directly in the browser window. The user can add pages, edit pictures, change links and perform other web-designing tasks very easily. Their user-friendly administrative interface is represented by graphics and even a person who has no knowledge of HTML, CSS, etc. can understand it within a short span of time. When a website owner decides to add pages or alter his site, he can do so using easily without needing to seek the help of a programmer or a designer.

3. Able to Build Great Looking Website
This is a no-brainer. Not many webmasters would want to build a plain website that would not attract any attention or traffic to the site. Many of these tools feature a huge range of aesthetic templates that can make a website look like it was designed by a real pro and the best thing is that many of these templates are offered free over the internet.

4. Open Source
Many of these CMS are open source tools which mean that any interested developers can add components to them. Presently, there are many talented developers who do that and they kept adding interesting components to these CMS.

You may not realise that the biggest advantage of all is that most of these powerful CMS are actually FREE. So do consider these powerful tools before building your site. I do not think you will be sorry if you do.

Software To Create A Website

Thursday, June 19th, 2008

By: Richard Adams

There is an ever growing list of software to create a website and the challenge is working out which is best for your needs.

They range from the super cheap and super simple up to the top end where you will spend several hundred dollars on a complicated yet very powerful piece of software to create a website.

Having been building websites for over a decde now, I’m going to take a look at some of these pieces of software to enable you to have a better idea of the best solution for you.

1) NVU

Nvu is freeware - which means you can download it safely and legally off the internet without paying a penny making this the cheapest software to create a website (though there are a few other free options we will be discussing here).

Nvu has proven very popular because whilst free it is quite a powerful piece of software and the learning curve going from never having used it before to creating quite a nice website is quite short.

2) FrontPage

FrontPage is Microsoft’s attenpt at web design software and whilst it can be simple to use and comes with a range of features to make attractuve (if basic) websites, you must have a special web host in order to use this software.

In that way, while some people swear by it, others still try to avoid this software to create a website wherever possible as it limits your options when it comes to your web hosting account.

3) Dreamweaver

Dreamwevaer is the top of the range option as used by professional web designers the world over. I have to admit that I myself have a copy of this software and it is *amazing* to use. It’s a case of being to do pretty much anything you like without limitations. You come up with a concept and next thing you know you’re making it a reality.

On the flipside, even as an experienced web designer I found it quite a challenge to get comfortable using, and for the average website you may well be paying for features you never use.

So unless you’re looking for software to build a website of the very highest quality I would consider the other options first.

4) Site Build It

Site Build It is a package deal of software and services which icnludes not just the facility to create a website but also to register a website address, make a logo, insert forms and sell products.

It is an ideal beginners solution as it offers everything you need in one handy place together with plenty of handy tutorials in video and text format to help teahc you everything you need to know.

However, as your skills and experience grow, you may find the limitations of this system too great as you try to add extra features just not allowed with Site Build It. It’s also one of the most expensive options going.

5) Joomla

Joomla is just one example of what is known as Content Management Software for CMS. Generally this software to create a website is used in addition to one of the other pieces of software here like Front Page.

Pleasantly Joomla is free software and controls how your website functions. So you can use your other web design software to make an attractive template so your site *looks* how you want (or just download one of the free templates for Joomla) then use Joomla to make your site *do* what you want it to.

Joomla makes it reasonably easy to add advanced features like discussion forums, link directories, guest books and contact forms to your site with little technical knowledge. You can even automatically translate your website into dozens of other languages!

6) Blogger

The last piece of software to create a website that I want to look at today is Blogger, a free service from Google.

Blogger let’s you choose from a range of different templates and sets you up with a free blog. You can go to nothing to having your own blog in a matter of minutes so it’s another free, beginner option to consider.

A Discussion on Website Development

Friday, June 13th, 2008

By: Mahoney

Websites have now become an important representative of your company’s corporate identity and it plays an important role in cutting a deep impression among the visitors. For this reasons website development has become extremely important. The needs of the audiences should be given special attention in case of website development. Feedbacks also deserve special consideration.

Website development is important for any corporate identity. Websites are used variously to sell products, to offer information about the company, throw light on the sales strategy, marketing strategy, and other promotional strategy. Web presence has become compulsory in today’s competitive world.

When you start developing your website, certain points deserve special attention that can make your website instant hit.

Your website should have a proper theme with a proper look and feel and it should be compact and concise, containing all the necessary information. Creating a website is not a one-time affair. There is a constant requirement for its modifications and developments. Website development should be done keeping in mind that your website should be search engine friendly.

Knowledge: Website development can really take advantage from the knowledge and the skills in different areas. When you decide to develop your website, you can get ideas how to go about it by conducting a research. It is a good idea to notice how other websites have been developed. This would help you learn what the factors that should be highlighted are and what else should be avoided. You can learn from the mistakes that others have done.

Images and Texts: Visitors visit your website for a reason, and that is to know something about it. What the website contains plays a very important role in creating a strong impression on the mind of the visitors. Each of the website templates must contain unique pages, relevant images, and a working navigation. Sometimes they also contain usable text.

Customization: Customize your website keeping in mind the objective of your website. This can be accomplished by adding and changing the images, inserting or deleting the pages, changing navigation labels and introducing links wherever you feel is necessary.

Strategy: For conducting website development successfully, first you have to decide your strategy and the earlier you do it the better. Plan your process well in advance so that you can include everything you should. An efficient plan ensures that your website development is up to the desired level. Your strategy should be based primarily on four factors. First, avoid all information that are superfluous, obsolete, and insignificant and those without any worth. Add information that has the potential to increase the worth of your website.

However, it must be made clear that website development is not a one-time affair. It is a continuous process. With the changing times, your goals change and as such, your website should be modified in accordance with it. Also, the visitors may get bored after a while if they find the same information from a particular website. Websites should be developed to attract new visitors and at the same time retain the older ones.

Website Design for a Professional Website

Friday, June 13th, 2008

By: Rob Bertholf

Website design and website development don’t just involve building websites for the client’s or for your business. Web design calls for something broader and greater. For a professional website there must be a certain degree of professionalism visible on the web pages. This is possible through effective web development and quality website design.

There are essential pre-requisites for the web development process in order that your website looks professional and user friendly.

1. The website must have sufficient quality content that must be appealing. In case you provide links for downloading, the time taken to download must be small and the procedure easy. The web design must ensure that the background, font, etc must be identical for all the web pages. colors used must be matching and visible.

2. Links on your website must function properly and the web development must be done in a manner that the graphics are clear and a sitemap is provided for easy navigation. The graphics must be used judiciously and the loading time must be small at the web development stage.

3. The content of the website must be updated regularly and the keywords must produce magical results. The website design and the presentation of the content must be done in a clear and formatted manner.

4. The web design must carry contact information and must respond to the visitor queries or feedback efficiently. Web design must be accessible from different browsers and free membership is a must at the promotion stage.

5. The website development must encourage visitor movement through the pages of your website with refreshing content, little or no flashes, pop-ups and animations, little registration and clean HTML.

These are the key things to keep in mind before the web design process. Web development must be done in a way that certain things are kept in mind.

Brower (Netscape Navigator, Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer, etc) compatibility is a must for any website

Bullets and numbering blended with animations distract.

Excessive graphics and pop-ups can kill your website

Advertising in excess can lead to a deterioration in quality

Lack of crawler compatibility can harm your SEO

Huge font takes time to adjust with the human eye

Tables and tools must be used effectively

Hence, website development process is indispensable and research must be carried out before finalizing the website design and content. Several times the web design can shoot back to the business if it is not taken care of while web development. Similarly, foreign phrases, heavyweight words, jargons, technical wonders, etc can also kill user interest in your business website. To be professional in your approach, the website design must be simple and the basics must need to be borne in mind.

Only then can your web development strategy create magic. Web design aspects when dealt with professionalism require minimum efforts and maximize your results. This is because sticking to the basics works best in your favour. Hence, website design and web development processes can make or mar your website depending on the professionalism the website development process utilizes.

Important steps to consider before designing website for your business

Friday, June 13th, 2008

By: Peter Arthur

1. THE FOCUS OF THE WEBSITE This is the first thing you want to define clearly before any other step is taken. You need to decide what the main purpose of the website is - what you want to focus on in terms of a subject. It is important that you define this step as clearly as possible because a website’s focus has a major impact on the whole project; this is the ‘foundation’ of the site.
For example:
A web store.
Information hub for established clients.
Branding website.

2. SPECIFIC WEBSITE FEATURES This builds off of the first step, where now you look at actual features that you need to implement. For example:
A shopping cart for an online store
A password protected section of the website
Again, the more detail the better.

3. MAP OUT THE MAJOR SECTIONS OF THE WEBSITE With the first two steps completed, you’re ready to actually start mapping out the major sections of the website; drawing out quick diagrams of the website is a useful way of doing this. A diagram can easily show the hierarchy of a website and how the various sections are related to each other.

4. WRITE OUT YOUR FINAL CONTENT This part is usually left to the end … then people wonder why they have to go back and rethink the structure of the site. All websites are driven by content; it’s the content that makes a site effective and successful. As such, this part of the process is arguably the most important, so you need to pay attention to it.

5. FIND A STYLE / LOOK FOR THE WEBSITE At this stage of the process, you are ready to start looking at the visual aspect of the site – the design. You have a few options: Hire a graphic designer / web designer Come up with your own design – I’m assuming you have some artistic and design experience. Buy yourself a website template and save time and money.

6. BUILD THE WEBSITE Yes, I know it seems impossible but you can finally start building the actual site at this point! With the above questions answered and steps completed, you’ll find the process of building the website (actually writing out the code,) is much easier and you will have reduced the chance of having to go back and redo things.

7. EVALUATE THE WEBSITE, MAKE THE REQUIRED CHANGES / UPDATES Once you’ve built the website, you should walk away from it for a day or two. This will allow you to come back and evaluate it with fresh eyes. It might also be a good idea to get someone who has not worked on the site, to take a look as well. Here are some of the things you should be looking for:
Clean easy to update design/structure.
Good usability in the design - and all that implies.
Fast loading ‘light’ pages.
Intelligent use of technology - using Flash when it makes sense not because you want a ‘cool’ intro! The website’s ability to convey the meaning/message of the website quickly if not instantly.

8. GO LIVE – REGISTER A DOMAIN, FIND A HOST, UPLOAD THE WEBSITE. If you’ve passed steps 1 to 7, you know you’re ready to show the world the website. All that is left to do is go live: Register a domain
Find a hosting company
Upload the website

Website Success by Design

Friday, June 13th, 2008

By: Ron Seawood

You never get a second chance at first impressions. Not only does this truth apply when developing personal relationships, it also applies in the world of website design. As I have traversed the World Wide Web, I have found sites that have been thoroughly impressive and others not so much. You would be surprised at the lack of understanding of the first impression principle.

In the age of information it is important to make your information as accessible as possible. If a customer cannot find what they are looking for on your site they are likely to leave and find it on your competitor’s.

People go to the internet for two things:

1. Find information on a product or service they intend to purchase 2. Make a purchase

There is no doubt the importance of website design as a tool for marketing goods and services. Upon visiting a website, the mind of the customer is made whether they will stay or go as soon as your website downloads. Your ability to keep them perusing your page is in based on a design that creates compelling exchange.

Regardless of what anyone says all humans look on the outside rather than the inside. It is our human nature to make judgments based on looks rather than substance during first encounters. If the cover of your book(your website) is not appealing than you will find that you have been judged only by your appearance and not the quality of the character of your site.

If the design of your website placed emphasis on deep and rich content yet losses a customer based on first impressions then you have wasted your time. When your website is perceived as confusing and uninteresting then your product or service will be perceived in the same manner.

A great example of this comes from Robert Cialdini’s book, Influence - Science and Practice, a woman owned an Indian Jewelry store in Arizona who recently purchased an allotment of turquoise jewelry.

The store owner had a hard time selling any pieces of this particular jewelry. She tried many sales tricks such as shifting their location to a central spot in the store, no luck. She had her sales clerks push the jewelry hard upon customers–with no success. One day the owner went on a buying trip but prior to leaving she left a note for her head saleswoman stating, “Everything in this display case, price x 1/2,” in hopes of getting rid of the offensive jewelry, even at a loss.

The store owners handwriting must have been horrific because the saleswoman mistook “1/2″ to be “2″, and the entire allotment was sold for twice the original price!

The jewelry only sold because a higher price led to a perceived higher value. You see, “Perception is the key to the mind”.

If you place your website in a side-by-side comparison to your competitor, both offering the same product, the same price and the same value, the one who wins is the one with the best design hands down.

Take time to think of what you are communicating to your customer and how it is best communicated. Through the creation of your compelling exchange your customer will find greater value in your website by “Design”.

Important Reasons for Website Development

Wednesday, June 11th, 2008

By: Mahoney

The advancements in technology have made it mandatory for businesses to have websites. However this is not the only reason for a website; there are several other reasons for one to consider website development.

1. The main reason to consider website development is to create a professional image for your business. This is because it is the website that is designed professionally that is more effective in attracting visitors which in turn may turn out to be new customers for you. Remember that a professional looking website gives a credible and trustworthy impression of your business.

2. You have to place importance in creating a website as it is a very important and effective promotional tool. With the right website, you are sure of having some cheap, but effective promotion for your business.

3. A very important factor of website development is that it is much easier and faster for you to update a website than updating of yellow pages or brochures. Moreover, with a website, you are saved of lots of printing expenditure.

4. Customers will be looking for information about your business to do business with you. And they can access this information from a well developed website that includes contact information like your phone and fax numbers, special offerings and important information. In fact, with an informative website, your site may be referred by other visitors for specific products or services.

5. Website development helps establish e-commerce and to expand web business. Remember that your single website proves to be effective in generating tons of business for you, through e-commerce.

6. It is because the World Wide Web is the greatest virtual marketing source that it has the highest percentage of demographic market. So with effective website development, it is possible to target lots of affluent customers to your site.

7. Remember that the internet is a global medium; so the right website development can help in your business or services reaching an international clientele. In other words, your website is vital in giving your business a global presence.

8. Another important reason to consider website development is that the website is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This is unlike the timings you have in your business. And if you include the relevant customer support in your website, the round the clock availability of your website can rake in much more clients and customers for your business. Moreover, you have no need of paying anyone overtime for working round the clock with a website!

9. By providing your email address in website development, you will be provided important feedback from visitors to your website. This feedback that you receive can be implemented for improvement to not only your website design, but also for improvements to your business.

10. And last, but not least, remember that people believe whatever they see. Flash web site designing – Considerations

Wednesday, June 11th, 2008

By: Cyrus

The popularity of using Flash components in websites has increased markedly, particularly after Adobe took ownership of Macromedia. Web designers are finding it easier than before to incorporate Flash more creatively and seamlessly into websites, without hampering download speeds.

Flash is a natural fit for Web designers. It enhances the visual appeal of a web page with its ability to deliver the message in a continuous movie format accompanied by audio. Its vector-based graphics are able to increase the interactive functionality of the website, which in turn increases the visitor to customer conversion rate.

With animated graphics and a supportive audio track, Flash is able to attract the attention of the visitor within the first vital seconds, that determine whether a visitor considers it worthwhile to further explore the website. The extensive multimedia capabilities of Flash, allow complex ideas to be presented in a more effective manner. Flash movies also load faster than other scripting such as JavaScript.

However, Flash is also prone to overuse. This causes websites to load slowly or cause the user excessive distraction with unnecessary animation. As text in Flash media cannot be read by search engines, it does compromise SEO (Search Engine Optimization) efforts.

When designing with Flash, the following should serve as a quick checklist:

1. Give the visitor an option to skip

Repeating the presentation of the same Flash movie each time a page is visited should be avoided. Give visitors an option to skip the presentation by offering a skip button.

2. Make the website SEO compatible

Search engines do not crawl content in a Flash presentation, (though lately, there have been some positive developments in this regard). The result would be a non-listing of the website in search engine results. One solution is to create web pages that have both Flash and text elements. You can put the keyword rich text in an HTML text format, leaving images and minimal text for the Flash-enabled banners, thus catering to both SEO and design. You can then selectively submit only those pages to the search engines which are not totally Flash-based.

3. Don’t forget the deadlines

Making complex Flash presentation is a time consuming process. If you are working against short deadlines, develop your HTML site first and add Flash elements after it has been put online.

4. Use Flash judiciously

Using Flash for the sake of it can prove counter-productive as it can come in the way of information gathering, particularly if the site’s purpose is to impart knowledge with a high density of text. Just the minimal use of Flash is often all that is needed, in for example, stock market related sites. In such sites, you can use interactive based graphs created in Flash to provide greater user flexibility and customization.

5. Don’t go over budget

Flash components raise the cost of website development. Therefore the extent of Flash usage in a site should be well planned to keep costs within budget.

Flash presents immense possibilities to enable designers to innovate and make websites interactive and absorbing. But remember, it is just another tool. Use it sparingly for greater impact.

3. Some provisions are of great freedom to play with fonts and offer a large collection. The fonts and backgrounds make a terribly great layout.
4. Children May comics as myspace horizons with a little popular animation characters thrown in. Similarly, youth may fall for popstar or sports layouts. Another kind of films MySpace Layouts.
5. Choose myspace layouts that allow sprucing it whenever he asks. For example, you do not like May maintaining the same good old time Christmas layout, year after year.

Give your visitors a unique experience with personalized Myspace layouts. Showcase your true self and your many faces with the best selection of layouts. Make your layouts so that they cannot be found anywhere else. Choose myspace layouts with passion, but easily.

To be sure, many who have tried did become overwhelmed and found the need to seek outside help.

Although Drupal was designed as a free application, it is still possible to get expert help and hire experienced Drupal web designers to handle the daunting task of website building and maintenance. 5 Essential Factors That Make a Website Powerful

Saturday, June 7th, 2008

By: James Elliott

There are some basic norms that are essential to keep in mind while designing a site. Designing a site is not a one person job. Equal contribution must be made by the web or graphic designer and content developer. Let’s us analyze some of the basic rules required for designing a successful website.

Easy to read

To make a powerful website, the very first rule is that your web site should be easy to read. Right from the font size to the background color of the pages, each element should be selected after proper thought. There must be a balance between the text and background color. In no way, one should dominate the other. Keep the text size normal, not too small or too large and there should be minimum use of capital words. The alignment of the main text of your site must be kept on the left as it makes it easy for visitors to read the content.

Good Navigation

Almost all the pages must have some links to other pages of your site. Try to make the hyperlinks clear so that visitors can easily find it. Moreover, graphic images, like buttons or tabs, should be properly labeled and easy to read, instead of making them flashy. Within three clicks, the visitor must be able to visit the webpage he or she is looking for. And moreover, the hyperlinked text should covey the message properly without misleading the visitor. Remember, the visitor can be fooled once but not always.

Proper Promotion

It is totally a wrong notion to think that the work is complete after building a web site. In reality, the real work starts from there. What is the use of the site if there are no visitors? Here, comes the importance of promoting your site both online and if required offline.

You can promote your site online through search engines, award sites, directories, banner advertising, electronic magazines and links from other web sites. However, instead of doing on your own, it is better to take help of professional web marketing teams. And when it comes to offline promotions, it can be done through traditional advertising methods like print ads, radio, television, brochures, word-of-mouth, etc.

Consistency in design

The layout and design of each and every webpage of your site should be consistent so that it gives a uniform look to the overall site. Moreover, it also projects a professional image. The designer should be particular about the use of font, background color, placement of images, headings, footers. If you are using the color blue for the hyperlinked texts in one page, the other web pages of the site should also follow the same pattern.

Quick to download

There are many studies which show that visitors leave a site for another if the web pages do not download within 3-4 seconds. No matter what type of web sites you might have, critical importance should be given to download times as that it can be accessed by the visitors with varying connections (both high-speed and low speed). A heavy web page with very attractive graphics that take ages to load is no good.

For websites which are new in the market, it become even more essential to keep the download time as short as possible. However, for a branded name like say Microsoft or Nike, people can wait for some time but for a new one, users will consider it just wastage of time.

In the end, you can adapt some of your personal preferences which you might want to add in your site. However, the above mentioned rules must be incorporated first by any web designing company.

An Overview of Web Development

Saturday, June 7th, 2008

By: Andrew Obidowsk

There are many reasons why a person may create a web page. Either for personal or professional needs, many people these days have a web site somewhere on the Internet. With advances in modern technology, web development has become much easier, so more people are delving in and making their own website. The web gives people an opportunity to have a special place all of their own that the whole world can see. They can build blogs, make videos and even just have a simple page telling all about themselves. The Internet is a place where everyone can be a star. This sudden increase in websites and increased use of the Internet is proof in the pudding the web development is continually on the rise.

Web development has come a long way since it’s early days. When the world wide web first started, it was primarily a way for intellectuals to share academic information. In a short matter of time though, the web started to see more of a public use, and sites started popping up that were more personal in nature. It almost seemed like anyone who had Internet access had their own little web page full of their personal information for the world to see. Then the businesses realized that web development was getting larger, and decided it was the perfect way for them to spread the word about their businesses. So they jumped on the web development band wagon and business web sites started popping up.

Once the businesses got involved, the world wide web started to grow by leaps and bounds. The Internet became a place where you could buy and sell anything you could imagine. It became a place where you could meet people and make friends from around the globe. As the web continued to grow, more and more people became skilled in the art of web development, and the process became much easier. In the beginning, web development was truly a specialized area of work that could be difficult for the average person to understand. However, with technological advancements that have been made, the process has become much more simple.

These days, it almost seems like everyone is adding their own little bit of web development to the Internet. Even young children seem to have a grasp on how web development works, and some of them have no problem in creating a website of their own. The Internet shows no sign of slowing down in usage, in fact, the Internet is pretty much taking over the world. As web development continues to grow everyday with new websites popping up every minute, there’s no end in site for the Internet. With more people getting online everyday, the web is just going to continue to develop and grow. The web has developed into the largest source of online media and information in the world. Anything that you desire to find can be found on the web, from any product imaginable to mail order brides!

Having started numerous businesses in Toronto web development is essential to stay competitive in any business. But to really stay on top of the game I use Toronto SEO services to keep my page ranked high in search engines.

Design Your Landscape Like A Professional - Think Layers!

Saturday, June 7th, 2008

By: Sharon Langston

Have you ever wondered what makes the difference between a nice, neat looking yard and a breathtaking professionally landscaped one?

One of the unspoken secrets of the pros is using layers in their designs. If you have any doubts about that, go to some of the most exclusive and expensive neighborhoods where you live and really look at the differences in those landscapes and the ones in the more middle-class areas. Big difference. Right?

You can look at world-class and famous gardens such as Canada’s Buchart Gardens or the Missouri Botanical Gardens as well and you’ll see it there, too. It’s layers!

Of course, there are many other elements about a design other than just using layers of plants, but this is the one that makes for a spectacular garden and landscape versus one that is attractive but somewhat mundane.

In using layers, you’ll find for example, large shrubs in the background or maybe some of the tall slender Italian Cypress-type trees, but in every part of the design there will be other shorter plants and flowers in front of those.

So if you think your small little yard can’t look amazingly beautiful and get a lot of attention from the neighbors, think again!

One example that could be used in a smaller landscape and get that gorgeous, lush appearance would be to have the tallest shrubs say, against your back fence (maybe Red-Tipped Photinia or a Privet Hedge with 2-3 tall cypress-type trees either in front of the hedge or off to the side, and then in front of that could be some Japanese Boxwood, kept to about a 4-6′ height (depending on the height of the hedges in back) and then to compliment the layers, maybe a statue or birdbath surrounded by smaller shrubs (such as dwarf Youpon Hollies or dwarf Pittosporum or flowers as an alternative).

Corners are wonderful for creative landscaping. One of the favorite corners in my own landscape is one between my back gate and the house. I’ve put two 4×6 pieces of trellis there (one on the fence, the other on the house to make a corner of trellis) and it is covered with lush beautiful ivy. In front of that is a birdbath on which I cemented a 20″ angel, and the birdbath is surrounded by small Youpon Hollies flanked by a beautiful hot pink Sage Bush and deep green Lariope. Simple, layered, inexpensive, but striking and very finished looking!

If you have a center-of-yard type garden design such as flowers or a ground cover around a tree for example, and you have several plants there, the same “layering theory” would apply: large plants nearest the tree and smallest at the borders of the planting.

I hope you have found this theory helpful and will apply it in your own landscape design. I think you will see an immediate difference!

For over 1000 landscaping idea pictures, many great examples of the “layering” technique used by professionals, please visit http://www.landscaping-your-own-beautiful-garden.com

Web Design and SEO Tips for the Newcomer

Wednesday, June 4th, 2008

By: IC

Find your Keywords!

Keywords – the words that people will use to find your website. Choosing the right keyword and being consistent with it is vital to your websites success in the search engines.

There are many tools on the market to help you make the right keyword decision. Tools such as Wordtracker will highlight keyword opportunities. We are looking for popular keywords in terms of expected traffic delivery but have a low competition score from other competing sites. This score can be called KEI.

KEI or Keyword Effectiveness Index is a measure of performance. KEI is a ratio of business against competitiveness. The lower the KEI number the harder to get results in the search engine results pages.

As a general rule avoid any keyword with a KEI of under 0.1 as this will be very difficult to target and you could be wasting your efforts.

Go for longer, perhaps 3 word keyword phrases that carry good traffic. The benefits being that they are usually easier to target and provide better, more qualified traffic. Try to avoid broad, non specific terms.

Competitors to that keyword?

Find out how many backlinks your competitor sites have - there are many to choose from, just do a search for backlinks tool. They all give varying results but don’t get distracted by that, just find a tool and use that in all cases, this will ensure that the results you get are at least relative.

No1 competitor HTML

Have a good look at the top two or three websites HTML for that keyword. Have they done anything that you can improve upon? usually be looking closely at three different sites you can arrive at a best method to use for your site. Ensure that title, heading and other tags include your keywords - remember to be consistent as mentioned earlier.

Improve your HTML

Aim to write valid HTML code. The search engine robots prefer clean code and a valid site will usually guarantee that all of your site will get crawled. Always take the time to write original content too - avoid the copy / paste syndrome that plagues many sites. The search engines thrive on original content, make sure that they notice yours.

Search engines are always looking out for duplicate content and will choose not to display your pages for a given search if it thinks your site is not the originator.

Some HTML tips with SEO in mind:

Description tag - take the tine to write an appropriate description tag for every page of your site. Google will display this in it’s results pages and a well written description here should lead to more searchers actually clicking your link and becoming a visitor.

Title tag - This is probably the most important piece of HTML. Always include your keywords here and write an accurate keyword rich title tag for every page of your site.

Keywords tag – It is good practice to put a list of related keywords into this tag although don’t overdo it and do not include any keywords that are not relevant to your web page.

Keep the code clean, use DIVs and not Tables where possible as this has many benefits and it means the ratio of content to code is greater. Try to use your keywords in heading tags throughout the pages.

Take the time to write original copy that uses the chosen keywords throughout. Write the text for a human to read though and not as though you’ve written it for a search engine. Over use (or spamming) of keywords will work against you always.

Try to get the good text content as near to the top of your code as possible. You could use CSS positioning to help with this.

Navigation – Use keyword rich absolute text links with a title where possible and not relative links.

Link to the domain name itself when linking back to the homepage and not /index.html. The search engines will then find the content in one place and not try to index two URL’s - a very common mistake.

To target several keywords, create several pages to do this using the above methods. You cant expect one page to perform for everything.
