  • Also, it is important to check that your link-partners carry weight. You may check the Page rank of your link-partner’s website - home page and Link-page by downloading the Google toolbar in your browser. Also, it is better if they carry a good ranking in the search engines for the key-phrases they link exchange for. This would give you quality link-partners thus giving you a quality link-exchange.

Few more tasks are submitting Press Release and Article into their relevant directories. Write a good Press-note that announces of some good accomplishment of your services and market your services through submitting your Press-Release into quality Press-Release Directories.

Over-Optimization and the Google Sandbox

So you put a lot of work into creating a really great website only to find that noone can find it and Google doesnt rank your site very highly. You hear about a thing called “search engine optimization” and decide to give it a try. Before you go adding your keywords to every element of your pages and building links any way you can, take a step back and remind yourself of the old saying, “sometimes less is more”.

Search engine optimization, or SEO, has really taken off over the last five years as more and more fledgling webmasters have created websites, only to find that noone comes to visit. As they search around for ways to get more visitors, most of them quickly find resources on how to optimize a web page for the search engines and go right to work sprinkling keywords everywhere and building links from any place they can get them.

This causes problems for a search engine because, lets face it, you are trying to manipulate the search results and they are trying to avoid being manipulated. After all, just because YOU think your site is a great resource on a topic doesnt mean that it is. Google has already adjusted for the webmaster that is over-optimizing their website, and its called the Google “sandbox”. The sandbox is a name that disgruntled webmasters have given to the situation where a new site that should rank well for a keyword is nowhere to be found in the rankings, only to suddenly appear one day several months down the road. What is this sandbox effect and what could cause it?

My theory is that the “sandbox” is actually more of a “trustbox”, meaning that Google looks at many attributes of your site to determine if you are attempting to manipulate the search rankings. The most obvious, and the twp traps that most beginning webmasters fall into, I believe, is over-optimizing your on-page content and building too many low quality links too fast.

I believe that the newer your domain is, the less tolerance Google has for over-optimization of pages, or suspiciously fast link building. Once you trip the filter, youre placed in the holding cell (”sandbox”), because Google suspects you of trying to manipulate the results. I also believe that the tolerance for over-optimization varies based on the industry, so spammy industries such as pharmaceutical drugs are far more sensitive to over-optimization than most. That can cause some discouragement by many who are hoping to find fast success, since those industries are already competitive enough that you NEED highly optimized content and lots of links to possibly compete for top rankings, but you cant do it too quickly or you will be sandboxed.

At a recent WebmasterWorld conference, Matt Cutts from Google stated that there really wasn’t a “sandbox”, but “the algorithm might affect some sites, under some circumstances, in a way that a webmaster would perceive as being sandboxed.” This means that avoiding the sandbox is merely a matter of optimizing your site without tripping the filters in Googles algorithm.

Ask yourself these questions to avoid over-optimization penalties:
- Is your title a single target keyword phrase and nothing else?
- Is your keyword phrase found in several of the following locations: title, header, subheaders, bold or italicized words?
- Does the page read differently that you would normally speak?
- Are you in a competitive industry that is frequented by spammers?
- Have you acquired a large number of low PageRank links quickly?
- Do you have very few high PageRank (6+) links pointing to your site?

In summary, the current theory about Googles “sandbox” is that it is actually more like a holding cell where the Google “police” keep your website when it is suspected of possibly trying to manipulate the search results. As the domain ages, most sites eventually gain enough “trust” to escape the sandbox and immediately start ranking where they normally would. Remember that Google is not manually ranking every website - in the end it is simply a computer algorithm and those who are able to score well in Googles algorithm WITHOUT tripping any filters will achieve top rankings and profit the most.

Search Engine Optimization Revealed – Keep It Simple and Content is King!

You as a webmaster want search engines to rank your website at the top of the search results for certain key words. Just like millions of other webmasters.

So how do you convince the search engines that your website deserves a high ranking when those keywords are searched for? The simple truth is you must have really good content. Content that provides the information being searched for in a simple straight forward manner.

If you want the search engines to think your site is important, then you need to make it important for humans. You need to make it easy for humans to navigate and make it easy for humans to find the information they are looking for.

However, not only do you want great content, but content that people really search for. It can be great stuff, but if no one searches for it then it won’t do you any good. There are a number of ways for you to find out what it is that people are really looking for online. There are services such as wordtracker where you can look up the number of searches occurring for any keywords and keyword phrases, as well as how many websites are competing with you for those visitors, and even what your chances are of achieving a good ranking for those keywords. This is valuable information.

Once you have great content that people are really searching for, then it’s time for you to make certain that you have all the important details nailed down correctly. This includes your Title, your meta tags, your alt tags, and a linking strategy.

Let’s think about the Title. It’s imperative that you give careful thought to your title, and be sure to include it in the Title meta tag. The title of your site is one of the most important ways that the search engines use to figure out what your website is about. For instance, if your Title is “The Truth About SEO”, then it’s a pretty good bet that your website is not about baking chocolate chip cookies! Make sure your title tag tells the search engine what your webpage is about, and ad the same time you want it to be meaningful to the humans that will see it too. You need the humans to click through to your site as well as having the search engine offer it to them.

Since the search engines often use the meta description for displaying the search results, make sure it conveys to the human reading it what the site is about and make it compelling. It doesn’t hurt to include some of the keywords either. Don’t however overdo your keywords. If your text doesn’t read well and sound natural, then don’t use it.

If there are images on your site then it wouldn’t hurt to have a keyword or two in the Alt text. But don’t over do it! Search engines are not stupid and will recognize key word stuffing. Resist the temptation to over optimize. Moderation is the key.

It’s ok to have a links page, but try to trade links with sites that ad value to your site. Stick to linking with sites that have something in common with the main topics of your site. The best links will come from webmasters who like your content so much that they link to you without requiring a link back from you.

Make sure you make it easy for the search engines to spider your site. If you must use fancy image links and dynamic menus etc, then make a sitemap so the engines can easily find your content.

Unfortunately, for good organic search engine traffic it will take time…especially with Google. It can take well over a year for your site to really start drawing traffic. So you should get going on it now. The sooner you start the sooner you will have that traffic. And when it happens you will be very glad that you did!

Unethical Methods Of Search Engine Optimisation

In the world of search engine optimisation there are generally two schools of thought on the methods and techniques that should be utilised to raise a website in search engine rankings. Of these two schools there is ‘black hat’ optimisation that can be described as unethical and pursues a course of action that works towards hoodwinking the search engine mechanisms into raising a sites’ profile. By using black hat optimisation methods however you will in fact harm your rankings in the long run, more advisable is the ethical route.

The history of black hat optimisation started around a decade ago when the search engine mechanisms, or algorithms were not yet developed entirely. Like most things in life if there is a way to cheat the system many will try. In these early stages the search engine algorithms were manipulated. This was especially true in the ‘adult’ industries where black hat optimisation was employed extensively to raise specific sites’ rankings. But how has black hat developed? What methods of optimisation are still considered unethical in the eyes of a search engine?

First and foremost a commonly used method has been keyword stuffing. Put literally this is the process of filling a webpage with lists of keywords that attempt to make a website more relevant in the eyes of search engines. Google especially has worked to remove the effects of this method by searching for true text rather than lists of bad prose that simply contain the right words. If a search engine does find you guilty of using such methods, penalties will undoubtedly follow.

Another method of black hat methods is the process of cloaking that utilises a hidden webpage that is only visible to search engine spiders. In combination to this hidden page that is only visible to the spiders there is an accompanying webpage that is viewed by human users. Once again this form of optimisation is seriously frowned upon in the SEO world.

In combination with keyword stuffing is the process of using invisible text, or mosaic cloaking. This is the process of making text boxes full of keywords, usually using a font colour that matches the background and hence invisible to the human user while remaining visible to spiders.

Another way of optimising a website unethically is to create a doorway page. Put simply this is a page that has undergone a process of optimisation and subsequently has great search engine rankings. The problem however is that this page has no real content and is purely used to link to another less highly ranked page. In conjunction with these doorway pages are spam pages that perform much the same purpose but instead are full of adverts that make money from each click; fundamentally these are detrimental to the quality of the internet.

Interlinking is another method of black hat optimisation that creates many websites and simultaneously links them all together to improve the back links to a site. This can be fruitful for improved rankings but once again will eventually harm rankings once search engine regulators pick up on it.

Finally there are two techniques that have been developed to combat the ever more advanced search engine algorithms. One of these is selling page rank, a process that simply involves selling links from a highly rankled page to a lower one. The other is buying expired domain names of sites that originally had good rankings and keeping the high number of links related to the site.

These methods are seriously unethical in the optimisation industry although unfortunately still employed by some unscrupulous operators. The crux of the issue is that they actively work to reduce the relevance of search engine results and subsequently are frowned upon.

There are operators out there who follow ethical methods and instead of trying to manipulate the algorithms use them to their advantage; this has been broadly labelled as search engine compliance. By studying the SEO methods that are being utilised on your behalf it is possible to identify the black hatters and instead use a white hat or ethical SEO specialist.

The world of search engine optimisation can be sometimes be seen as an industry that is part science, part art form. Not all realise the consequences of their actions and a certain amount of guesswork can be involved in the process. That said there are those in the optimisation industry that know exactly what they are doing; but for the lay reader, here are ten of the most common myths concerned with search engine optimisation.

The first myth is that when you are involved in the process of optimisation it is a necessity to submit your website URL directly to search engines. Whilst this had been true in the past, when the search engine technology was not very advanced; in the last five or so years it has rapidly become an outdated technique. Fundamentally, carrying out this task will be a waste of time and energy, not to mention money.

The second optimisation myth is that your site must have a Google sitemap. Whilst this may be partially advisable it is not an essential component of your site. A well constructed site that is spider friendly and welcomes the search engines with open arms should negate the need for a sitemap. It is not always a waste of time putting a site map in place however, it will not hurt to put one in place, but it will not however guarantee success.

Constant updating of websites has rapidly become fashionable in the search engine optimisation industry. While updating content regularly may increase the rate at which spiders crawl through your site, it does not always ensure higher rankings. Once again however this does not hurt your site, so if you feel you would like fresh content on a regular basis it is advisable to update frequently.

An ongoing myth in the optimisation industry is that a dedicated pay per click campaign will in fact harm your organic search listings. Headers are becoming increasingly important within the industry. The header tag or H1 can bring good rankings but it is not necessarily foolproof. It is clearly possible to achieve good rankings without an H1 tag, but common practise is to include one anyway. If they are used correctly they will almost certainly benefit your sites’ rankings.

The keyword tag in the Meta information; it has been believed, should contain words used on the page. This is an increasingly obsolete perspective as optimisation specialists are realising that the importance of keywords tags is becoming less and less. The entire purpose of this post was (a) don’t overlook resources that are right under your nose and (b) sometimes you have to slow down and smell the flowers to chart the route of your site over time as you can tell where a site is headed, based on where it has been.

If a site owner preferred the term ‘low cost airline’ over ‘cheap flights’, their website would not appear in the results of the ‘cheap flights’ search - what a pity.

Talk the talk. It’s the first thing a website must accomplish to become discoverable and is a major goal in search engine marketing - SEM. Talking the talk means using the search keywords and search terms that your customers use, word for word.

In the example above, any site involved in airline travel needs to include the keywords ‘cheap flights’ if they have this service to offer, and if those are the words that customers use to search for that service.

This is a new phenomenon in the world of marketing, known as search engine marketing. If you want to be discoverable online - you need to mirror the words that your customers use. You are not free to choose these keywords, because if they don’t match your customers search terms - you won’t be found. This doesn’t apply to global brands because everybody knows who they are and will search for them by name.

Small to medium sized enterprises do not have this luxury. Do not be fooled by the results of searching for your own website address. Yes - you are top of the list - problem is - nobody knows your website address - so their not going to search for it.

Your site needs to be found for the services and products you sell, and the first step to discoverability is to describe them using the search terms and search keywords that customers use to discover them.

Whenever folks want to store this getting involved in Internet marketing the first thing that comes to their mind is what the difference between natural search and paid search is. Paid search is when your ad shows up at the very top of a Google search or down the right hand side of the results page. These are called “sponsored ads”. You pay for those positions. Natural Search is when you type in a “keyword” and a link and a description shows up on left hand side of the search result page. The only way to get on the first page is to have very relevant content on your web site and links to your site from other relevant sites. This is a long process for people in it for the long haul. There are a lot of companies that claim to be able to get you on the first page of Google. That may be true if the “search term” is very specific and no one else would ever search for it but you or they are using a “black hat” method that could get you site banned from the search engine.

Search engines like Google, Yahoo and MSN are really just data bases. When you do a Google Search you are not searching the “world wide web” you are searching Google’s data base. There are two ways to get in to these databases. One is to submit your site to the different search engines. In about 6 to 9 weeks the search engine will index your site. They have software that comes to your site and index every page and adds it to the database. They come into your main web URL and follow the links to all the pages of your site. They capture key elements from the code on your page to the content. These are then stored in the data base. When someone puts a keyword in the search box the “algorithms” determine the best page or links to the best pages for your search.

The other way to get added to the search engines data base is to have the search engine software find you through a link to your site from another web site back to yours. The software, called “spiders” will periodically comeback and re crawl your site to see if you have updated it.

One important thing to know is that each page on your site is indexed individually and each page stands on its own. The ranking are based upon the combination of correct meta tags, relevant content to the keyword they are trying to get rankings for and link popularity. Mostly one way links back to their site from relevant sites.

As long as the search engine can index the site, clearly read the meta tags and content, the better. The big issues come when a site is built in flash with very little content (search engines cannot read or index “flash” sites. Also, if the bulk of the relevant content is in PDF format this is bad because the search engines cannot read PDF. If the search engines cannot index the relevant text there will be no rankings.

You all ready know this but “sites” are not ranked, individual pages are ranked for specific terms found in the content of that page as well as link popularity, (relevant links pointing back to that specific page) for the term that you are trying to get ranked on. This is why each page has to be giving very specific attention.

Bottom line: Paid search means you pay for your position. The benefit is if you have the $$ you will get instant traffic. Stop paying and the traffic goes away. Natural search is free traffic but it is built over time. The advantage is that if done right, it can provide traffic for a long time.

Search traffic (paid or natural) is the BEST traffic to have because you are being found by folks who are specifically looking for what you have. It does not get any better than that.
