Is Social Marketing a Colossal Waste of Time?

Wednesday, May 21st, 2008

It ’s one of the buzzwords of today ’s internet world: Social marketing. If you’ve been selling on the internet for very long, or you’ve just been thinking about trying your hand at internet sales, you’ve probably read web page after web page about how social marketing is the future of ecommerce.

But some marketers think it ’s a colossal waste of time. Is it worth the time and energy it takes to launch a social marketing campaign?

Well, to evaluate whether social marketing is a worthwhile strategy, let ’s look at some of the ways that social marketing can build your business:

1) Viral marketing. Putting your company and your products on sites like LinkedIn, Facebook, Squidoo, and FriendsWin encourages people to tell their friends about you.

The more you interact with other internet users through these sites, the more people will become excited about your products. And when you’re excited about something, don’t you naturally want to tell other people about it?

There ’s a common myth that people only tell friends about negative experiences with companies and products. It ’s simply not true. Myspace didn’t acquire 330 million accounts without viral marketing. Likewise, FriendsWin didn’t add 25,000 subscribers in 3 months without word-of-mouth referrals.

Even products as simple as Beanie Babies (remember those?) were wildly successful because people told their friends about them, not because of aggressive ad campaigns.

2) Connecting with other business owners. Social marketing not only allows you to connect with potential buyers; it puts you in touch with other entrepreneurs who are marketing similar or complimentary products.

Gone are the days when every internet marketer acted like he or she was on an island, well-distanced from competing marketers. Today ’s internet business environment demands that marketers work together toward mutual success.

Internet users simply don’t have the time and patience for endless advertisements, so it ’s imperative that marketers work together to sell complimentary products to targeted, interested buyers.

For example, let ’s say you’re selling high quality pizza baking stones. You could develop your marketing plan from scratch, and rely on SEO and pay-per-click to find customers who want to buy your pizza stones.

But what if, through your social marketing efforts, you found Joe, who sells premium pizza cheeses, sauces, and other ingredients imported from Italy?

Through cross-selling, you and Joe could develop a “one stop shop” where pizza lovers could find everything they need to bake great pizza at home. His customers don’t have to scour the internet looking for the perfect pizza stone, and your customers don’t have to hunt for premium pizza ingredients.

Providing this kind of convenience could easily generate more sales than either you or Joe could generate on your own.

3) Quality backlinks to raise your search engine ranking. Social networking sites like Myspace, FriendsWin, Squidoo, and Facebook all have tremendous pull with Google and other search engines. Linking to your website or blog from these sites can substantially improve your own search engine position.

It ’s also an excellent way to get backlinks from people who like your products, and from other internet marketers. Remember viral marketing? Backlinks from customers and fellow marketers are simply an extension of this type of marketing. Even better, backlinks are not only highly effective, they’re free.

Sure, social marketing can be tedious and time consuming. There will always be entrepreneurs who tell you that social marketing takes up too much time to be effective. But if you have the patience and the vision to grow your business through social marketing, you’ll gain some pretty enviable advantages that will help you and your business succeed.

Link Building

Link Building – One of the fastest ways to uplift your website rankings

In the virtual world of Online Marketing and Search Engine optimization, the off-page factors are becoming more and more important for a website to boost up its ranking in the search engines.

It is very important to know that link building can either make or break your website within the search engines. You have to be very careful with your link building campaigns.

For a website to rank high, it has to have solid link popularity apart from the on-page optimization. This link popularity refers to the number and quality of in-bound links that point to your website. But as said, link popularity can either make or break a website. Hence, one has to be very careful while building link popularity for one’s website.

One of the oldest methods in off-page optimization is Link Exchange. Few tips while doing link Exchange are as follows:

Link exchange is a task defined under Search Engine Marketing by which you exchange your website link with the link of a counter website; thus mutually benefiting both the parties.

  • At the outset, create a ‘Links’ or ‘Resource’ page that carries the same theme/ design look. Define Categories for putting the Anchor text (or title) of your link partners. These titles shall - ‘on click’ open up the website of your link-partner.
  • Your link exchange partners should not be your direct competitors.
  • When you offer your link partner with a link exchange proposal, always see that you have already put the link of your link-partner in your resource page and presented the proposal-email with that link for your link partner to refer.
  • Your email should be personal and should not look like a spam. It should explain the benefits of link exchange that would happen between both the parties.
  • Also, quote your Title and Description that you want to get displayed in your link partner’s link-page. Giving html source is always a better option so that the link-partner will directly copy and paste it.
  • If you don’t receive a reply to your email-proposal, try again after 3 days. Keep trying till three tries for your link-partner to know that you are not a spam bot but you are serious in your intention of emailing the proposal. If you don’t get any reply after three tries, take-off the link and acknowledge about it to the proposed link-partner.
  • Also, it is important to check that your link-partners carry weight. You may check the Page rank of your link-partner’s website - home page and Link-page by downloading the Google toolbar in your browser. Also, it is better if they carry a good ranking in the search engines for the key-phrases they link exchange for. This would give you quality link-partners thus giving you a quality link-exchange.

Few more tasks are submitting Press Release and Article into their relevant directories. Write a good Press-note that announces of some good accomplishment of your services and market your services through submitting your Press-Release into quality Press-Release Directories.

Same way is for the article. Write an educational essay on subject that describes your product/ services in your industry. And then submit it into relevant high page-rank directories for getting quality links from Content-rich web pages.

Like Press Release Submission and Article Submission, you may also submit your website into a Quality Online Directory. Get your website URL added to the Quality Directories to get rich link-backs for your website. Take care of submitting your website into relevant category. Directory Submissions, Press Release Submission and Article Submission prove to be very useful for Quality link building.

Experiments and Results: Targeted vs. Untargeted Traffic

Monday, April 28th, 2008

By: Trey Pennewell

Most webmasters are always looking for new and inventive ways to drive traffic to their website. There are many proven methods of getting the traffic to a website, but if that new increase in traffic does not convert into sales, then is it still worth the effort that you put into getting that traffic?

I had a discussion recently with a colleague about generating traffic from outside of our target market. As a result of our discussion, we decided that we certainly could utilize various markets to get a huge boost in traffic, but since this traffic would likely not result in any conversions, that there was really no point in spending the time and effort on going after that traffic.

In a previous “experiment” on one of my websites, I started using the social networking tactic to generate traffic. I bookmarked a page of my site and submitted to many of the standard sites like, www.digg.com, www.reddit.com, www.furl.net, www.spurl.net, etc.

By doing this, I was able to get a huge increase in traffic to the site for a couple of days. The problem is, that I did not get one single conversion from this new traffic. I used a catchy headline and a good description of the article that I submitted to the social networking sites, good enough to get people to come visit the page anyway. But with the lack of getting a single conversion, it really did not seem worthwhile to me to do again in the future.

Now I know that some of you might be thinking, “Well, his sales pitch must be terrible” or that “His website is poorly designed.” If this were the case, I would have no problem admitting to this, but when I compare the untargeted traffic that I received from the social book marking sites to the targeted traffic that I see from organic searches I can see a big difference in conversion rates. The targeted traffic that comes from organic searches generally results in a 5-8% conversion rate. The untargeted traffic resulted in a 0% conversion rate.

How To Talk To Prospects Who Are In Your Target Market

The above results lead me to believe that a much better use of my time would be to focus more on the targeted market and to stop wasting time on the untargeted visitors. There are many techniques that can be used to find prospects in your target market. Many of these techniques are old news to experienced webmasters.

Some of these methods include contextual marketing through programs such as AdWords, posting on relevant forums, improving your Search Engine Optimization (SEO) for the organic traffic, and submitting articles to article repositories. You can also buy paid advertising in newsletters that cater to the people who are most likely to buy your products or services. These are just a handful of the methods that a Webmaster could utilize to get in touch with his or her target market.

Each of the above listed methods has their pros and cons.

Time commitment and ongoing financial commitments are two of the cons that are mentioned on a regular basis.

The pros given with all five typically represent tightly targeted traffic, suitably primed for conversion to paying customers.

The Dick Cheney Analogy

The Dick Cheney analogy has often been used to talk about this subject. Should you use the Rifle Approach or the Shotgun Approach?

The Rifle Approach lets you pinpoint your target and to hit it with great accuracy and frequency. The Shotgun Approach is sending a number or projectiles into a flock of birds and hoping you hit something. Dick Cheney proved that the shotgun sometimes hits its mark. (tongue-in-cheek people, tongue-in-cheek.)

For example, if you are selling health related products, then a media buy in WebMD would make good sense. People browsing WebMD are already interested in health and therefore are more likely to buy your health related products. People who are browsing on Myspace are not motivated to think about their own health at the time they see your ad, so your chances of success with Myspace ads are greatly diminished.

So, if you are going to expend time and money to attract visitors to your website, shouldn’t you take care to primarily target people who are most likely to buy what you are selling?

Playing The Odds To Our Favor

Sure, a shotgun approach can sometimes hit its mark; we know that. But, if your cost for advertising or time expense is exactly the same, why aim for 1-2% when you know you can hit 5-8% doing something else?

We still mix-and-match our advertising approach. We aim most of our projectiles at the 5-8% conversion targets. We still aim a few projectiles at the 1-2% conversion prospects, because it allows us to reach people that we may not be able to reach otherwise. But, any method that we use that consistently turns 0% is taken off of our plate forever.

Free Search Engine Traffic – Choose the Right Keywords and Your Traffic Will Soar!

Sunday, April 27th, 2008

If content is king, make your keywords your servants! It’s pretty simple; good keywords bring lots of traffic, bad ones don’t. If you want that free search engine traffic, the first thing you need to do is to find out what exactly it is that people are searching for in the area that you are interested in. Then you pick key words that relate to your topic of interest, and that people are really searching for. You can have the best content in the world, but if you optimize for the wrong keywords you still won’t get that sought after traffic.

For example, let’s assume I am going to build a site about water heaters, and I want people to come to my site. I need to find out what kind of information about water heaters that people are looking for so I can build pages optimized for the keywords that people are really using.

The first thing I do is go to a keyword tool to do my keyword research. There are a number of keyword tools online, my favorite is Wordtracker. Others include KeywordDiscovery, and the Google AdWords suggestion tool There is simply no substitute for doing your keyword research. With these tools you can put in a seed word or phrase, and the tools will provide you with lists of related keywords and keyword phrases that are searched for, and how many times per month they are searched for. Using these tools there are ways to estimate the size of the market for products and services, ways to optimize you web pages, find new niche markets, and much more.

With Wordtracker I find quickly that many more people search for “tankless water heater” than search for water heater…which surprises me. Nearly as many people search for “hot water heater” as search for “water heater”. Wordtracker also informs me that there are far fewer websites trying to be ranked high for “hot water heater” than for “water heater”. Ah-Ha! I’ll be sure to optimize a few pages for “hot water heater”. In fact, I find that the terms “tankless water heater”, tankless hot water heater”, tankless water heaters, electric tankless water heaters, and tankless heaters all have more people searching for them than “water heater”.

Single word keywords are very difficult to get high rankings for, so it’s wise to shoot for longer keyword phrases. Three and four word phrases are what I use most often.

After finding out what information people are looking for, and what keywords they are using to find that information, you can build the appropriate pages and optimize them for those keywords that have significant traffic searching for them.

Now that we have our keyword list and we are ready to build our pages, where do we put the keywords?

The first and probably one of the most important places to have your keywords are in the title tag. This is one of the tags in the head section of the html code of your web page and lists the title that is displayed in the web browser. Internet Explorer displays this tag in the top bar of the browser window. It’s very important that you always write for humans. The search engines are getting smarter and smarter, and they are looking for sites optimized for humans, not search engines.

Get some of your keywords into the keyword meta tag, not crucial but it won’t hurt.

Make sure you have some keywords in your Alt tags for your images…don’t overdo it though. Write it for humans, but try to work a few keywords in if you can. Alt tags are displayed as a popup when you pass your mouse over an image.

The Description Meta Tag is still a valuable place to use your keywords. Many search engines will look at the description Meta tag for keywords to compare against your body copy. Yahoo uses your description tag as the description of your site in their listings. Consider the description tag just like it is named, a concise description of your site. Keep under 50 words.

Your body copy is obviously a very important place for placement of your keywords. Remember, write for humans. If your keywords don’t appear in your body copy, you won’t place high in the search engine results for those keywords. Work your keyword into the text appropriately. Select one or two keywords and make the page specifically about those keywords.

Use your keywords appropriately for humans on your site where you can. This will increase your search engine effectiveness.

4 Key Strategies to Reach the Top of the Search Engine Rankings

Thursday, April 17th, 2008

Have you ever had a friend call you and say, “Hey, I googled myself today and actually found me!” Cool, you think. You go to your computer and try to google your friend as well. Nothing comes up. You tell her. “Oh, well, you have to click “next” at the bottom of the page. Keep clicking that until you’re on like, the forth-seventh page-do you see me yet?!” Of course, just keep clicking “next,” why didn’t you think of that?

You didn’t think of it for the same reasons millions of other people searching the Internet don’t think of it. They’re either in too much of a hurry to pay attention to anything after the first results page, or they’ve come to believe that anything after the first results page isn’t as interesting or helpful.

Getting your website and business on search engines is a good way to help promote yourself, but getting to the top of the search engines is where you want to be. After all, people aren’t going to keep clicking until they find your site on the forty-seventh page. People don’t even know they’re looking for your site. It’s your job to put it out there so it’s easy for them to find, and one way you can do this is by getting to the top of the search engines.

Before you submit your website to a search engine you want to first make sure your site is rich in content and that you are avoiding all spam and html tricks. Then, once you’re listed, keep these keep points in mind:

1. The higher your number of inbound links, the better. One of the best ways to get inbound links is by writing articles on your niche. The absolute best thing about using this approach is that it is absolutely free so if you are on a tight budget this is a sure fire way to get great rankings with the search engines without burning a hole in your wallet.

2. Pay loving attention to each page of your site, use keywords that relate to your niche in the titles of your pages if possible and frequently throughout the text, as long as it does not affect the quality of the content you are delivering to your visitors.

3. Keeping keywords at the top of your page is the best place; matching search phrases is more effective than matching single words

4. Elaborate graphics are not helpful, they take forever to load and do not contribute to your rankings with the search engines. Remember, your goal is to generate highly targeted traffic that produces a profit not to win the prettiest site award. There are tons of ‘ugly’ sites making very handsome amounts of money.

Once you’ve been successful in getting to the top of the search engines, you must keep working to keep yourself there. It is crucial to monitor your status on a regular basis, and pick up the step if your position on search engine result pages starts to slip.

Ways To Appear On The First Page Of Google Search Results

Wednesday, April 16th, 2008

Once you create a website for your business, you quickly figure out that people are not flocking to it. When you assess the different ways of driving traffic, your options include advertising your website address, promoting your website address through Public Relations and gaining media coverage, encouraging other sites to link to you and getting placed in online directories.

However, these marketing activities will deliver small and sporadic volumes of traffic. The single biggest thing you can do to drive traffic is search engine marketing. If you want to drive traffic to your site it is imperative that you get onto the first three pages of Google and the other top search engines.

Here are few ways through which you can get your site appear on the first page of Google search results.

In order to optimize your website to appear in natural search results, there are four components that you will need to address.

1.

Design: Many small businesses make the mistake of designing their website and then start thinking about driving traffic to it. The problem is that the way you design your site can result in your site being ignored by the search engine spiders, which means you will receive very little traffic. When designing your site, ensure you avoid the following pitfalls.

Flash: Sites are designed in HTML or flash codes. The spiders that are sent to your site by the search engines cannot read flash.

Frames: Some agencies design sites within frames. It makes designing the site easier as the only thing that changes from page to page is the content within the frame. However, spiders cannot read what is inside a frame so you will not get indexed and noticed by search engines.

Dynamic pages: Some sites are developed with a database which generates dynamic pages. Again, most but not all of the search engines can read dynamic pages.

Text within graphics: To ensure text is read uniformly by different browsers, design agencies often put text within a graphic. It looks great, however, a spider cannot read what text is in a graphic and simply moves on.

Keywords: At design stage, think about the keywords you want to be found by on search engines and incorporate that into your design.

2.

Content: Major areas to be stress upon are:

Keywords: Choosing the keywords that you want to appear in search results for is one of the most important things you can do. Invest time in choosing the keywords. Think about how you would search for your product or service. Once you have decided on your keywords, you need to place them throughout your site. The main areas are:

Web page title: This is what you see written in the title bar of the browser. This should explain what the purpose of your site or your page is and include keywords, but always in such a way that makes sense to a user who reads it.

Meta tags: The tags are not visible to users but they explain what the content of the page is. Keywords should be placed in here as they are easily searchable by spiders.

Homepage content: Your homepage is searched by the spiders and you should ensure that your keywords appear near the top header. They should also be sprinkled throughout the homepage.

Keyword density: Each page should have a minimum of 250 words; your keywords should account for 2 - 8% of the word on the page. That means they should appear between 4 and 16 times. To help you achieve both objectives you should focus on a couple of keywords for each page rather than a large number.

3.

Links:

Inbound links: your site might be designed in a way that is easily searchable by spiders and your content might be sprinkled with keywords, but you need to have other sites linking to you in order to achieve success. Ensure you know how many other websites are linking into your site and set a goal for increasing that figure. You can Post comments on forums or discussion groups with a link back to our site or Register your site with multiple directories in order to get links.

4.

Maintenance: Once you achieve a high ranking in the search engines, it is important to realize that you need to maintain your ranking. The criteria the search engines use in the algorithms constantly change and what works today may not work next week. Your site will need to be tweaked to bring you back up the rankings.

Search Engines 101 Paid Vs. Natural Search

Wednesday, April 16th, 2008

Whenever folks want to store this getting involved in Internet marketing the first thing that comes to their mind is what the difference between natural search and paid search is. Both strategies have their pros and cons but can be very effective as part of a marketing strategy. The following article is a brief description of both natural and paid search strategies.

Paid search is when your ad shows up at the very top of a Google search or down the right hand side of the results page. These are called “sponsored ads”. You pay for those positions. When every you click on one of those ads the owner of the ad pays Google. This is also called “pay-per-click”. The amount you pay is determined by several factors including what you are willing to pay every time someone clicks on your ad.

Natural Search is when you type in a “keyword” and a link and a description shows up on left hand side of the search result page. The only way to get on the first page is to have very relevant content on your web site and links to your site from other relevant sites. This is a long process for people in it for the long haul. There are a lot of companies that claim to be able to get you on the first page of Google. That may be true if the “search term” is very specific and no one else would ever search for it but you or they are using a “black hat” method that could get you site banned from the search engine.

Search engines like Google, Yahoo and MSN are really just data bases. When you do a Google Search you are not searching the “world wide web” you are searching Google’s data base. There are two ways to get in to these databases. One is to submit your site to the different search engines. In about 6 to 9 weeks the search engine will index your site. They have software that comes to your site and index every page and adds it to the database. They come into your main web URL and follow the links to all the pages of your site. They capture key elements from the code on your page to the content. These are then stored in the data base. When someone puts a keyword in the search box the “algorithms” determine the best page or links to the best pages for your search.

The other way to get added to the search engines data base is to have the search engine software find you through a link to your site from another web site back to yours. The software, called “spiders” will periodically comeback and re crawl your site to see if you have updated it.

One important thing to know is that each page on your site is indexed individually and each page stands on its own. The ranking are based upon the combination of correct meta tags, relevant content to the keyword they are trying to get rankings for and link popularity. Mostly one way links back to their site from relevant sites.

As long as the search engine can index the site, clearly read the meta tags and content, the better. The big issues come when a site is built in flash with very little content (search engines cannot read or index “flash” sites. Also, if the bulk of the relevant content is in PDF format this is bad because the search engines cannot read PDF. If the search engines cannot index the relevant text there will be no rankings.

You all ready know this but “sites” are not ranked, individual pages are ranked for specific terms found in the content of that page as well as link popularity, (relevant links pointing back to that specific page) for the term that you are trying to get ranked on. This is why each page has to be giving very specific attention.

Bottom line: Paid search means you pay for your position. The benefit is if you have the $$ you will get instant traffic. Stop paying and the traffic goes away. Natural search is free traffic but it is built over time. The advantage is that if done right, it can provide traffic for a long time.

Search traffic (paid or natural) is the BEST traffic to have because you are being found by folks who are specifically looking for what you have. It does not get any better than that.

Online Marketing – Steps to Success

Wednesday, April 16th, 2008

Small business owners should take time to understand the concept of marketing through local business profiles on the Internet. Well-planned efforts in online marketing attract traffic from the local community and drive profits and lead generation. Marketing has to be continuously monitored. High-paying potential customers in the local market can also be targeted through various online local business marketing strategies.

Monitoring a marketing plan with modifications is necessary to ensure survival in the cut-throat competition of local business. Otherwise, competitors will copy the same marketing methods and drive away valuable local customers. Your marketing strategy needs to be sophisticated and top notch. You need to employ cutting edge technologies and eliminate old, outdated strategies that no longer support your business.

The question, How to succeed locally?” should be asked before diving into the web. As part of the mid-year marketing process, all marketing should be examined thoroughly. Is this technique working? Does that particular strategic technique work better than another? Why does it work? It is important to constantly question your marketing strategy. What works for you today may not work for you next week. Also, what worked for you last year may not be the right move for you next year. You should consistently review your marketing to ensure that you are maximizing what you get out of it. Minor adjustments and modifications wherever necessary should be carried out. An existing strategy that works well should continue to be pursued.

A straightforward approach through online marketing can lead your business to better profits. Without online local advertisement techniques, local customers will be unaware of available products and services when they surf local businesses online. That means you need to get your company online today! Don’t wait another moment. You could be losing valuable customers every minute that you aren’t advertising online. Yes, online! Local customers do not find products or services needed in the telephone book, but they search for local businesses through the Internet. Local search engines help customers find businesses in the neighborhood that offer products or services needed.

You could be missing out on business opportunities right in your own community, customers who are heading to your competitor, because they could not find you through a quick internet search. Don’t let that happen. But don’t feel that you have to drag customers to you either. With your business profiles listed on various search engines, the chances are that customers will find your business and come to you. They will see your business and contact information. They will opt to use your services.

You can often outperform competitors by using local business registration by expert marketing companies that are continuously evolving their search engine and marketing methodology. Pagerank Update!

Tuesday, April 15th, 2008

Before letting you know on the changes made to the pagerank of ArticleSet.com’s pages during today’s update, I would like to give an answer to some basic questions in case you’re new to this stuff.

What is PageRank and why is it important?

Simply put, PageRank is a value from 0 to 10 that Google assigns to indexed webpages, according to the importance they give to that specific page. The importance is that a higher pagerank means a better position in search engine result pages.

Where can I view the PageRank of a website?

The Google Toolbar displays the PageRank of the page you are viewing in your browser in a small green bar.

to see the pagerank of pages you are surfing.

About the pagerank update

The reason I’m so happy is that today there was a new pagerank update and ArticleSet.com has received some good rank values. Generally updates happen once every three months. ArticleSet.com is only about two months old so this is the first pagerank update it has experienced. When a new website is added to the web, all it’s pages have a pagerank of 0 and of course this was the case for ArticleSet.com. After this update the homepage was given a pagerank of 4 and all of the secondary pages a rank of 3. I believe it’s a good start. We can now talk business at a different level.

Internet Marketing And Viral Marketing

Tuesday, April 15th, 2008

Viral marketing is a unique tool designed to create so much buzz about the article itself that even the largest sites will want to publish it.

Those who use this technique have seen incredible spikes in their site visitation simply because viral marketing can provide a quick boost in traffic.

In a campaign where viral marketing is successful traffic can go from a few hundred visitors to several thousand.

How does it work?

The idea is to create content that is so compelling that when you offer it free of charge you will find the content being used by large websites. Because you have links in your free-to-use article you will find readers who are interested in your writing coming to your website to see what you offer.

This has the effect of turning on a faucet. The traffic comes pouring in, but like most things in life it won’t last. Attention will soon focus on other new articles. Viral marketing can be a bit like the “flavor of the month club”.

So do I keep trying to create a buzz with new content?

Well, you can, but you also need to hope that other secondary sources will continue to carry and archive your viral articles.

Think of viral marketing like the spread of a virus. The hope is that your content will spread all over the Internet providing positive back linking opportunities for your website that will last much longer.

What sets viral marketing apart?

Viral marketing is often negative and controversial. It thrives on either raising the blood pressure of the reader or jarring the reader into considering something they have never considered before.

The articles need to be cleverly written with titles that grab the attention of the skimmer. These are individuals who scan until something catches their eye. In this case it could be a viral marketing article.

Why don’t more people use viral marketing?

In my estimation there are three reasons people don’t use viral marketing.

1) They don’t know what it is. They may have heard about it before, but most have no real idea of what it is or how it works.

2) They don’t know how to write a viral marketing piece. There really is an art form to the process of writing this type of article. It’s a skill that can be learned, but many don’t take the time to learn it.

3) The don’t feel it represents their business well. The truth is the negative feel of viral marketing and the controversial nature of much of the content can make the use of viral marketing problematic for some business owners.

Viral marketing is a strategy that seeks to grab a share in the proverbial fifteen minutes of fame by rolling out a dynamic article that can improve traffic to your website for an extended period of time. The positive residual effect is in multiplied backlinks from sites that will carry your article long-term. The reason this is a positive for business owners is that a growth in backlinks is generally viewed as improved trust by search engines and they will reward your business site with enhanced rankings. The best result would be better overall sales.

Perhaps the primary consideration for using viral marketing would be whether or not the article is a positive reflection on you and your business interests. If not then viral marketing may not be a perfect fit.

Online Marketing – Steps to Success

Tuesday, April 15th, 2008

By registering your business online, you have just entered a whole new market of local customers. Your business will thrive. Your potential will grow and guess what? It is very cost-effective to use the Internet as a local marketing tool. You will spend a lot less than you imagined marketing your business.

Introduction to Social Media…

With the increasing use of Internet and Technology, website owners are looking for more new ways to expand their businesses and are building strategies to move out through various channels. Their prime aim is to attract more consumers than ever before.

In today’s competitive market, the simplest way that many website owners adopt is Search Engine Optimization services for their website. Search Engine Optimization helps the web-pages to get crawled easily and rank that page high in the search engines. But then how to develop an additional customer base or how to create a more loyal customer base is a million dollar question for all businesses.

For a small website with less number of pages or less competition in its business market (which is a rare case), the website easily gets on the top SERPs with proper Optimization of the website, few Search Engine Marketing activities like Directory Submission, Link Exchange or using Blogs. But for a website with good number of pages –targeting very competitive keywords, with high competition in the business, it takes much more of it to rank high.

Let us recall the Universal and finely accepted –thumb kind of rule that says “Word of Mouth (WOM) is the best Marketing” –that not only gives rise to new customers but increases the loyalty of your customers. SEO- The Most Unnoticed Yet Important Marketing Strategy on the Internet

Monday, April 14th, 2008

By Ghanshyam Shah

Today many businesses are turning towards having their own websites. Having an informative website or rather having a virtual presence on the www platform has become very common now a day.

But then there comes a very vital question: what is the use of having a website if your potential customers can’t find it!

There are many different ways like email or banners or print ads to drive people or rather say Web Traffic to your website; but if you think more about this, there’s no prominent way to score more online customers other than by spooling in people who tell what they are interested in, what information they want, request information on your website and visit you website at zero or rather say no advertising cost.

Then here is where the Search Engine Optimization comes into picture.

Search engine Optimization and Search engine marketing is the low-cost and high-return tool for targeted advertising. And it’s proven that one yields great rewards by adopting and utilizing this tool. I would rather say that there is no better way any body can challenge that can drive better traffic to your website.

It is proved that in b2c ecommerce models, online businesses have yielded more business than traditional brick and mortar ones. But the only way seen now to stand above in the crowd and stake your claim in the online industry is by employing the sound practices of search engine marketing.

Today, many are adding-on their presence in this virtual business world. SEO is a tool that is affordable by all. And small players have started to compete with the big ones by using the smart moves of SEO.

People strive hard to get their websites to the top of Google’s, Yahoo’s, and MSN’s search results.

The best way is adding proper Title and Meta to each of the web pages of your website. You have to be very careful in defining your keywords and description. Try to have key-word oriented titles; and that is a simple and straight way to have your pages ranked higher for that keyword.

The Google algorithms consider this very much. Also important is on-page optimization where in you put Heading tags, Alter tags (to pictures and links), ‘links’ in the content wherever applicable, using images with low size, giving bold and italic styles to keywords and titles wherever applicable, etc.

This is a very simple strategy which is overlooked by many who just simply have their websites ready. They just get satisfied with the look and feel and then soon get frustrated when they see no business from this investment.

SEO helps your website - result into top “organic” search- rankings in the search engines and this doesn’t cost you a thing.

Also, other SEM activities which are commonly practiced by people are: submission of website URL into different search engines, online directories, submission of their articles into article sites, press-release into press-release sites, Blog- URL into Blog sites and getting into link-exchange with relevant sites.

These activities help a lot in getting more links throughout the World Wide Web network. And this ultimately helps for the boosting up of websites in the search engines with higher ranks.

SEO is a powerful tool. As truly said by Eric Schmidt, CEO of Google: “Search is the ultimate expression of the power of the individual, using a computer, looking at the world, and finding exactly what they want.”

If you use this tool in a wise way, you simply add money to your business with more customers and more prospects.

Search Engine Optimization- The Significance

Monday, April 14th, 2008

From a small local business in a town to a big industry playing on an international platform, marketing has been a prime tool for any company or business to succeed. People started with using tools like write-ups, references, pamphlets and much more to convey their means or advertise themselves among a group. But now is a time where everything happens just on the click of your finger. And in this time is required marketing at the speed of light, marketing with niche concepts that are applied even before a common man would think.

With the time we are moving from a physical world to a virtual world. Companies started building up their websites to have a presence in the virtual world. But likewise there are billions of websites. What would be your identity then? In this age of Internet and Technology, getting your business visible to your customer segment is more important and this is where the Search Engine Optimization comes into picture.

Building up a website is like making a saw and optimizing your website is like sharpening that saw to use. And it is quite logical that you cannot take optimum use of your saw without sharpening it.

Search Engines are a system through which one gets the information the later wants. Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the volume and quality of traffic to a web site from search engines through search results. Usually, the earlier a site is presented in the search results, or the higher it “ranks”, the more searchers will visit that site. In simple words, Search engine optimization (SEO) just means your site is as accessible as possible to the search engines to improve the chances that they will serve it up when your potential customers type in specific search terms (called keywords). The more easily search engines find your site, the higher up it appears on their results pages.

In this world, SEO is definitely a smart move for any business.

But getting your site ranked for your keywords, there are many aspects that play a key role: a proper site structure, clean coding and necessary keywords, to name a few. This requires the every page of your website to be optimized. Every page should have a proper title, genuine keywords and a perfect description that matches the page. These title, keywords and description have to be relevant for every individual page. Search engines “crawl” the Web looking for the keywords that their users enter, so putting those keywords throughout your site means your pages will be picked up during searches by the search engine. Hence you have to put your foot into your customer’s shoe to understand what keywords your customer would use to search for a particular product or service. You have to learn your customers’ mind and this will give you the best of Title and meta (Keywords and description) to optimize your website. Also, optimizing your content is equally important as that plays an important role. You may optimize your content with putting keywords in your content, giving the Heading tags to titles, giving bold effects wherever necessary, giving links (to phrases in the content) to internal pages wherever appropriate.

Also, other activities to rank up your website in search engines are submitting your website URL into more and more search engines, adding your website URL into online directories, building up links with other relevant business sites, submitting rich articles into article sites, submitting your blog pages into various blog sites, submitting Press Releases into various Press Release sites. This will both increase the traffic overall to your site and enhance your search engine rankings, since the search engines pick up on the number of times people link to and from your site and rank your website higher accordingly.

People try many techniques to boost up their website ranking in these search engines for the specific keywords. People make researches to add-on their skills to make this task easier, faster and more genuine.

There are companies that provide services for SEO to other companies. We at Semaphore Software (www.semaphore-software.com) have a dedicated team that researches on the SEO and SEM (Search Engine Marketing) activities and undertake projects to upgrade the website ranking for our clients from different businesses.

It has become very important to move ahead with the fast pace if you wish to survive your business in this global competition.

Is it Normal to Plateau When Doing Continuous Link Building?

Thursday, April 10th, 2008

A WebmasterWorld member has been applying regular search engine optimization and link building techniques and is noticing that the traffic hasn’t improved as substantially in the latter months of the campaign as it did initially. Is this something normal?

Actually, in many ways, it is. The first few months are typically a lot easier than the later months. Tedster mentions that sometimes it takes links time to reach their full power and cites Google’s “Historical and Age Data” patent.

There’s no reason to give up, though. It’s time to focus your energy on building links from high quality relevant sites. Focus your energy on building good content to attract such links.

Forum members also believe that it may not necessarily be link building that can be holding you back. It could be that your competition is ahead of its game. One suspects that it may even be the work of a human editor. What you can do, though, is take the recommendations and be aggressive in your link building efforts. Then see if you move up.

Forum discussion continues at WebmasterWorld.

Legitimate, Useful Subversion For Search Engine Marketers

Wednesday, April 9th, 2008

Often, the hardest part of any search engine optimization or marketing campaign is getting changes made to the website. Figuring out what to do is often easier than convincing all the stakeholders—including marketers, IT departments, web developers—to take the necessary actions, and coaching them along the way as they apprehensively take baby steps forward. As search marketers, we also need to test web sites. We always want to tweak things and see if we do better, and if not, we go back and try something else. We also work in teams.

Success in search marketing campaigns often depends on the nitty-gritty details of execution. That is why I have spent a lot time investigating different tools that help automate our work flow and promote teamwork. One of my favorites goes by the apt and clever name of Subversion.

Subversion, also known as SVN, is free open source software that provides revision control of source code, web pages and other documents. Revision control means that all current and past versions of each file are saved, with notes about who edited them and what they did. If a bold change goes terribly wrong, a few clicks restores a prior version of the site. Revision control also permits multiple editors to work on the same files without wrecking each others’ work. After updating their local files, everybody can be confident that they have the latest versions. Most edit conflicts are automatically resolved.

Revision control software is much more efficient than ad hoc arrangements such as emailing files back and forth, or using Dreamweaver’s FTP synchronization feature. A web server is for serving web pages, not for syncing files. Our Subversion server provides much faster data transfer, and Subversion tracks changes line by line, so it only transfers the lines that have changed, rather than whole files, saving even more time.

Here are a few situations where Subversion helps most:

Eliminating the IT bottleneck. When a website is hosted in-house, the IT department often does not provide web server FTP access for security or management reasons. They usually want to control all changes, rightly so, because they are responsible. However, IT staff are busy or may lack experience in search optimization. It normally takes three times longer to teach a client how to fix their own website than to just do it for them. IT departments like Subversion because it saves them time, and provides an audit trail, as well as a reliable backup copy of the website in case the server ever suffers a meltdown. When a client is on Subversion, even if I do not have FTP access, I can still grab the latest copy of their website, make the necessary edits and commit them to the repository. Then I ask the client to pull updated files from the repository, review the changes on a development server, and release them to the live site. Verifying and releasing a website update is faster, and requires fewer skills, than editing.

Replacing content management systems. One of the selling points for content management systems is that clients can edit their own website, especially when multiple people are involved. Content management systems usually introduce design rigidity, causing website improvements to take longer and cost more. When websites have a catalog with thousands of parts, or a shopping cart, a content management system is obviously necessary, but when a website is just brochure-ware, content management systems can be a poor investment and an impediment to search marketing. With Subversion, we allow clients to use Dreamweaver or Contribute to edit sites themselves. Everybody on the team uses Subversion to coordinate changes, and if somebody wrecks the site, we can roll back to the prior version. With Subversion as a safety net, the editing process goes faster, and more people can have access.

Delegating work. When managing staff, I need to see what they are doing, and be able to jump in on a moment’s notice when help is needed. Having direct, immediate access to the source code makes it easy to fix a bug in the middle of the night when a client complains. I do not need to tell everybody “sync your files” or risk having them erase my change. Subversion handles that automatically. If a client emails a request, any employee can help themselves to the latest code from the repository, and make edits. Without Subversion, having more than one person working on a site risks confusion.

Backups and using multiple computers. My nightmare scenario used to be losing my computer. What if it breaks? I’ve switched most of my business management tools to cloud computing, such as Basecamp and Freshbooks. But I still have a few important files on my machine, plus all the websites I am working on. Subversion provides secure cloud storage for all those critical files. Subversion makes both of my computers interchangeable. I can right click on any folder to quickly synchronize files from the repository.

Subversion has two components: a server that stores sets files (called modules), and a desktop client for accessing the server. The Subversion server can be installed locally, or on a remote machine. I prefer to use a hosted service such as CVSdude, where they handle all the details for a nominal monthly fee. Tortoise SVN is the most popular Subversion client for Windows. Tortoise asks for the URL of the repository, a userid and a password. All files in a module can be checked out, edited as needed, and then changes are committed. Tortoise integrates into Windows’ File Explorer. Folders show a green check mark if they are current, or a red X when they have been changed.

In 2007 Forrester Research called Subversion “the sole leader in standalone software configuration management (SCM)”. When something that good is free, you think most people would use it. However, most search marketing professionals I speak with have never heard of Subversion.

Jonathan Hochman has two computer science degrees from Yale. He runs an Internet marketing consultancy and a web development shop.
