Is Social Marketing a Colossal Waste of Time?

Wednesday, May 21st, 2008

It ’s one of the buzzwords of today ’s internet world: Social marketing. If you’ve been selling on the internet for very long, or you’ve just been thinking about trying your hand at internet sales, you’ve probably read web page after web page about how social marketing is the future of ecommerce.

But some marketers think it ’s a colossal waste of time. Is it worth the time and energy it takes to launch a social marketing campaign?

Well, to evaluate whether social marketing is a worthwhile strategy, let ’s look at some of the ways that social marketing can build your business:

1) Viral marketing. Putting your company and your products on sites like LinkedIn, Facebook, Squidoo, and FriendsWin encourages people to tell their friends about you.

The more you interact with other internet users through these sites, the more people will become excited about your products. And when you’re excited about something, don’t you naturally want to tell other people about it?

There ’s a common myth that people only tell friends about negative experiences with companies and products. It ’s simply not true. Myspace didn’t acquire 330 million accounts without viral marketing. Likewise, FriendsWin didn’t add 25,000 subscribers in 3 months without word-of-mouth referrals.

Even products as simple as Beanie Babies (remember those?) were wildly successful because people told their friends about them, not because of aggressive ad campaigns.

2) Connecting with other business owners. Social marketing not only allows you to connect with potential buyers; it puts you in touch with other entrepreneurs who are marketing similar or complimentary products.

Gone are the days when every internet marketer acted like he or she was on an island, well-distanced from competing marketers. Today ’s internet business environment demands that marketers work together toward mutual success.

Internet users simply don’t have the time and patience for endless advertisements, so it ’s imperative that marketers work together to sell complimentary products to targeted, interested buyers.

For example, let ’s say you’re selling high quality pizza baking stones. You could develop your marketing plan from scratch, and rely on SEO and pay-per-click to find customers who want to buy your pizza stones.

But what if, through your social marketing efforts, you found Joe, who sells premium pizza cheeses, sauces, and other ingredients imported from Italy?

Through cross-selling, you and Joe could develop a “one stop shop” where pizza lovers could find everything they need to bake great pizza at home. His customers don’t have to scour the internet looking for the perfect pizza stone, and your customers don’t have to hunt for premium pizza ingredients.

Providing this kind of convenience could easily generate more sales than either you or Joe could generate on your own.

3) Quality backlinks to raise your search engine ranking. Social networking sites like Myspace, FriendsWin, Squidoo, and Facebook all have tremendous pull with Google and other search engines. Linking to your website or blog from these sites can substantially improve your own search engine position.

It ’s also an excellent way to get backlinks from people who like your products, and from other internet marketers. Remember viral marketing? Backlinks from customers and fellow marketers are simply an extension of this type of marketing. Even better, backlinks are not only highly effective, they’re free.

Sure, social marketing can be tedious and time consuming. There will always be entrepreneurs who tell you that social marketing takes up too much time to be effective. But if you have the patience and the vision to grow your business through social marketing, you’ll gain some pretty enviable advantages that will help you and your business succeed.

Viral Marketing Is Topping The Scales In Popularity

Tuesday, May 20th, 2008

Viral marketing strategies are becoming implemented more as we’ve come to know more about it ’s power to propel a business faster. Viral marketing has really taken off in the last couple of years and with it, so have many of the viral marketing examples and strategies in which people are utilizing. In the course of just the last year we have seen some amazing software products and several programs in which to spread your viral marketing campaign farther.

In any viral marketing campaign, there are certain things that a person or company has to keep in mind. For one thing, behind every campaign there has to be some type of gain or incentive for the person to want to pass the message on. Campaigns that don’t really give back to the sending party, most likely won’t benefit from viral marketing advantages.

For example, if we are speaking of cases of viral marketing for list building, many viral marketers have taken to using tell-a-friend forms. But, regular tell-a-friend forms are not usually enough to give a person the needed incentive to push a campaign along. It ’s for this reason we started seeing products such as Viral Friend Generator come into play. With Viral Friend Generator, we seen that by adding a third step to the process, we could add a bonus of some type to the sending party. Prior to this, regular tell-a-friend forms weren’t really hitting the mark.

In some cases of viral marketing it doesn’t always need an incentive such as material goods to be effective though. In fact, the most successful viral campaigns are the ones that are created with emotion being involved. People that have been touched either by compassion, laughter, or shock are usually the most effective. If a person can have some type of profound experience by receiving a message this can spark a huge viral campaign. We don’t have to look very far to find campaigns of this type online. With the advent of video being used so much in marketing these days, it has completely impacted the way in which viral campaigns are developing.

Blogs are becoming much more viral friendly as well. Some of the Wordpress plug-ins that have been developed for boosting people ’s posts in many of the Social Bookmarking sites, or RSS submission services are really getting amazing. It ’s so great to see some of the technology that ’s coming out with helping in viral marketing. But, remember to use some of these plug-ins you do need to have a Wordpress blog hosted on your own hosting account. Otherwise, most aren’t created for use with such blogs created on Blogger or on Wordpress ’s own servers.

There are a few very good products and strategies that have come to very good use for marketing viral. Definitely one of my favorite outlets these days for re-branding and creating my own versions of viral marketing software came with a membership I got with the guys at IMBuzz softwares. Each month I get a brand new one, and each of these has always been of very good quality. It ’s one of the best memberships I think I’ve ever been a part of. Since I’m in the viral marketing niche, these softwares suited my business like a glove with some key advantages for viral marketing! I’m also a huge fan of Viral Spiral. It ’s helped a very good friend of mine and myself to create a good sized mailing list, and also provided a place to help people along with their online marketing careers. It ’s great to be able to do this virally, plus help people at the same time.

If you have ever been interested in implementing what is now available to you with viral marketing, there really couldn’t be a better time than now. We are living in a perfect time with access to some very powerful platforms and programs to help with your viral marketing campaigns.

Exchange Your Web Site Popularity

Tuesday, May 20th, 2008

Link exchanging has become a legitimate and respected practice amid many webmasters in the online community. Once concerns over being confused with a “link farm,” made many site owners hesitate, however the idea never failed to transcend such worries and has become a popular option for building traffic.

If link exchanging is performed in a professional and reasonable way, it can boost the results of your hard work. It an improve search engine rank, offer great link popularity, and ultimate, increase your worthwhile web traffic.

To maximize your benefit and improve your traffic, there are several factors you need to be aware of. Link exchanging only works when you know precisely what you want to say. You must both know your “niche,” or area of specialty, you must have a fully finished web site. It isn’t very interesting to consider a link exchange with a site that is, “under construction,” and is most likely new. New web sites simply don’t have the traffic of established sites and it often takes time before any such volume of traffic will regularly visit.

Once your site is complete and ready for traffic, you can start looking through the similar web sites out there. It ’s best to avoid seeing these sites as simple “competitors,” if you want the system of link exchanging to work. These sites can bring you a great deal of traffic that is already interested in what your site offers.

When you are exchanging, do not behave in ways that will get on other webmaster ’s bad sides. Don’t demand that they link with you or expect an immediate response to your offer. Webmasters are often hit with tens or hundreds of visitors requesting link exchanges. Watch your tone in your communications and appreciate the effort of all parties involved. Never set deadlines or try to pressure the other webmaster into linking with you. If they are interested they will respond.

Naturally, if you want to exchange, always get permission from the other party ’s web site beforehand. Do not expect someone to link with you just because you placed a link to them on your page. Another common behavior to avoid is the virtual, “bait-and-switch.”

This is where you agree to a link exchange, wait until they have posted your link, and remove the return link to their site. This will often get your link permanently removed with no hope of future exchanges with that domain.

Also, actually visit the sites you want to exchange links with. Many webmasters are good at noting which offers are genuine and which are impersonal or automated.

Now that the basics of what you should not do are established, it ’s time to discuss how you can benefit and prosper from link exchanging.

For link exchanging, create at least one page that ’s specifically for your links. This should be visible on your home page. You may have as many pages as you like so long as you don’t overdo your linking on each page. The limit for linking penalties in search engines is around twenty or twenty-five links per page. When you pass this amount, you run the risk that a search engine will mistake your page for a link farm.

For example, if you have a site devoted to electronics and exchange links with similar sites, you will showcase different areas for software, computer systems, and hardware on your partners’ sites. This gives your visitor a greater knowledge of where the links point and what they can expect to find at the end of them.

It will also improve your visitor ’s experience if you organize the exterior links. Some webmasters leave a small notification to let visitors know clicking on the link will take them away from their site.

Your “guest links,” will have a title and a brief description. Your titles should be in simple title format with no all capitals or “toggle” formatting. A good title length will be around twenty-five characters.

To optimize your link exchanging, keep your link descriptions brief, as well. Never use more than twenty words to describe where each link points to. Be concise, precise, and straightforward about your inner navigation and the navigation you have to sites outside.

Link exchanging can provide a beneficial tool for promotion and profiting from the internet. By adhering to a few simple rules, you can have all the traffic of exterior links without any search engine penalties for doing so.

How to Use eBooks for Marketing and Promoting Your Online Business

Tuesday, May 20th, 2008

There are innumerable ways to use ebooks to promote your business and drive quality traffic to your website. Once posted on your site, you can turn them into a daily course, which brings your customer back to read the next chapter. You can use them as a free gift for making a purchase or for filling out a survey. Put your ebook on a disc, and you will have an innovative brochure. Blow your competition away by inserting the disc into your sales packages.

The most effective marketing products are those that are unique. Copyright your ebook, and immediately, you have a powerful tool that you, and you alone, can offer to the public. People will have to visit your site to acquire your ebook, which increases the flow of quality traffic and the potential of sales and affiliate contacts. Make sure that you keep your ebook current. Update it frequently as the market and trends change. Add new advice and techniques to show your prospects how your goods or services can enrich their lives. By constantly keeping abreast of new trends and techniques, you can continue to see profits from your ebook for years after your original creation.

Another phenomenal advantage of ebooks is that you can test their marketing potential without putting out hardly any cash at all. You can even produce an ebook one copy at a time, each time you receive an order, eliminating the need for storage and inventory. By this method, you can gauge the saleability of your ebook, and make adjustments as necessary until the orders start pouring in. Ebooks allow you to learn about your market and customer habits and motivation over a period of time, without risking your precious financial resources.

They also provide you with an invaluable way to gather marketing information, which you can use in many different facets of your business. Use your ebook to discover what the specific goals and problems are in your specific industry. Then figure out how to solve these problems, and publish an ebook with this invaluable information. This will increase the value of your business, upgrade your reputation, and get you known as an expert in your field.

You can extend the value of single ebook by breaking the book down into chapters for a serial course, into special reports available on your website, or into audio or visual tapes. Ebooks can be broken down into several different promotional materials by excepting some of the articles and using them to promote your product. You can include a catalogue in your ebook to promote all the products or services you sell. You can include a thank-you note for reading your book and an invitation to download a trial version of your product. Or you can include a form for your audience to contact you for further information or with questions, thereby building your business relationships and your mailing list. Using ebooks in this manner helps to cut the cost of individually producing separate promotional materials. You can use a single ebook to entice new prospects and to sell new products to your current customers.

No other medium has this kind of flexibility and ability for expansion. Think of your ebook like a spider spinning a beautiful and intricate web. Now go and create that web, and see how many customers and prospects you can catch!

Link Building and SEO Link Development Strategies

Tuesday, May 20th, 2008

Depending on your link building and development strategy, finding the right link velocity (the rate in which you acquire or lose links) can determine how your pages rank respectively in search engines.

Although the title may sound like a jingle, all cliches aside, building the ideal quantity and type of links each month to maintain a stable search engine ranking is a unique formula for each site (which could be 20 links per page or 40 links per month per term for every competitive top 10 keyword).

Although link building is not the “magic bullet” for creating a high ranking position, it ’s contribution to the process is undeniable. Finding the elusive number of links for each of your keywords is crucial for managing hang time in the SERPs (search engine result pages).

Here is a basic SEO technique you can use to quickly determine how competitive a keyword is. For example, if a keyword has 10,000 or less competing pages using the exact match form of the term “in quotes” in Google, then hitting the top 10 for a keyword like this would only require 15-20 quality inbound links & a few pages of great content.

If a keyword returns search results “in exact match” in the 500,000 to 1,000,000 result range, that is considered a competitive keyword.

Competitive keywords may require hundreds of links to impact them with an entire series of pages supporting the sites most relevant page via internal and external links. Each market has it ’s own unique ranking criteria, but if you are working with a site that has acquired ranking power, acquiring terms under 50,000 results in Google is like picking the low hanging fruit.

To see how competitive some of your keywords are, try looking at your keywords in “exact match” form, just “type your keywords in the quotes instead” then see how many competing pages are targeting that keyword.

In the beginning building links with the throttle wide open and developing a plethora of links is typical. Then after you hit the top 40-50 results (with that page), then ease back and use finesse to climb the remaining positions into the top 10 search results.

Experimentation is the key, and each site reacts differently to different circumstances (so don’t rely too heavily on any one tactic). The key is finding the best line of SEO defense, which is to add a stream of fresh links as well as focusing on link quality above link quantity (all it takes is one from the right source).

Link velocity (the rate in which you gain or lose links) is an important component in maintaining how your pages will pass vital link juice and nourishment to the rest of your site. If you slack off, you lose your footing, or if you create a spike by building links too fast, you could invoke a penalty (and actually lose rankings).

Using deep links (linking to specific pages using optimal anchor text) has a profound impact on search engine placement. Deep linking capitalizes on the perfect marriage of content and strategic link building and hastens the development of authority for your site. As a result, you require less links (per keyword) over time to maintain and defend your position.

When initiating a link building campaign, aligning the fundamental aspects needed to acquire a high ranking position are rather elementary, what may not be so apparent is the amount of time it takes until all of the off-page and on-page criteria align and you gain access to the top 10.

Getting there is half the fun, but staying there requires a constant vigil as the demands for competitive phrases have a high churn rate (top 10 one day slipping 10 positions the next).

In closing, here is one of many methods for determining the best page to build links to with the highest occurrence of the keyword on that page.

Just use Google and add the following search command:

[keyword] site:domainname[dot]com in a search box & hit return (brackets around the keyword are not required and replace the word dot with a period). Then Google will return the page with the highest relevance for those keywords for the respective domain.

The value in this strategy is, the pages lower on the screen in the top 10 results returned are the ones with the least amount of relevance for that term, so you can either develop addition links to them (to build them up), or use the top 2-3 results to add more weight to those pages.

In either case, you entire site gains additional allinanchor relevance (the number and quality of the keywords in the anchor text/link) which is a major facet to defending your position as well as climbing higher up the rungs of the ladder in search engines.

Link Building - How It Helps Your Page Ranking

Monday, May 19th, 2008

The term “link building” is becoming a common word in online marketing strategies because it directly relates to how popular your website is. But what exactly is “link building”?

Understanding link building

Link building is one tactic that website owners discovered as a way to get their websites to appear in the top results of search engines. The method by which search engines, such as Google, qualify websites was based on their web page rankings, in other words, it ’s basically a question of website popularity. In early years, search engines determined this position by the number of “keywords” they have on their website, either on the text itself, the title, etc., which is basically any and all elements on the page.

Naturally, web programmers for the search engines figured out that website owners found a loophole in the existing system and were cramming way too many keywords into their web pages. They then designed the search engines to determine the quality of the website based on the number of links from external websites. Their thinking was, this website must be good or informative which is why many people are providing a link to it.

Theoretically, it was sound in principle. Unfortunately, as with any other good intention, this condition was also abused. Website owners found a way to acquire and set links towards their websites by listing themselves in link farms. Link farms are basically websites with nothing but links to other websites.

Thus, search engines got another overhaul and up to date, this is how they determine the quality of websites - they assigned a quality factor to the links pointing to your websites. Meaning it wasn’t in the number of links that your page has been referred to but in whether these links also have a high quality rating that will enable your website to be in the top pages of the search engines.

How to maximize link building in order to get high web page rankings?

Now that you have a basic comprehension of how link building was developed, what are the things that you need to do to initiate good links to raise your web page ranking?

First, you need to understand the different type of links at your disposal. There are (a) one-way links: inbound and outbound links and (b) two-way links: reciprocal links. Inbound links are those pointing to your website from other websites. This was the original intention of the search engine developers based on the concept that if someone likes your site, they’ll refer or recommend it to others. As such, they get more quality points and are highly recommended if you want to increase your web page ranking. Outbound links are those that you as a website owner point to a website other than yours. It may not increase your link popularity but neither will it decrease it. Reciprocal links, as the name suggests, is a two-way link. You can point to a different website at the same time expecting that website to point to yours. This will be to your advantage if the link pointing to yours has a high quality ranking.

The key is getting links from websites with high quality ranks. Also, getting listed in well-known directories, like Yahoo, is always a plus.

Second, you need to continue to offer creative, interesting and informative content to keep readers coming back for more. If they like your site, you don’t even need to ask them to create a link to your site, they’ll do it of their own volition.

Third, take advantage of your networks, like suppliers or customers. A good relationship with them will always ensure reciprocity with good links as well. You can always create new networks when you come across websites that you yourself find relevant to your business or personal life. You may choose to email the website owner and request a link from their site to yours. Some times, they may expect a reciprocal link, other times none is required. It will also be good if you ask them to visit your website prior to making their decision to know that you are above board with your request.

Who needs it?

If you want qualified traffic to your website, you’ll invest in a link building strategy. The higher your quality of links is, the better page ranking results you’ll get. It means that your website will always be on the first page of search results if you have a high-ranking web page. It usually implies a certain sense of trust in your website and therefore in your products and services as well if you have a lot of quality inbound links to your website. Be aware though that link building is a time-consuming process and its effects may not be seen and felt immediately. Nevertheless, if you persevere and take action based on what was mentioned earlier then expect to see results and a guaranteed increase in traffic in your website.
