Google is the most powerful search engine on the web and its main goal is to provide web surfers with the information they are looking for. 

Google is a huge network providing services in 112 languages, with tens of billons of web pages indexed, hundreds of millions of search queries a day. It is expanding its features, attracting more and more visitors and searchers. Universal Search, which combines pictures, videos, web pages all in one search, and new map service named Street View are the latest ones in Google’s innovations. 

While Google keeps growing, it is becoming more complicated to provide web surfers with better search results. While providing with search results, Google has to be very careful and picky to be sure, that the searcher will find what he looks for. 

Google has a team of engineers, working at a department called ‘search quality’, who are to provide with better search results. Amit Singhal, 39 year old, who joined Google in 2000 and is now a Google Fellow, is the head of this team. 

“Search over the last few years has moved from ‘Give me what I typed’ to ‘Give me what I want,’ ” says Singhal. 

So Google’s main task is to have a perfect ‘ranking algorithm’, which is the main secret of the company. There are 200 types of information and criterias, which are called signals, to determine the PageRank of a web page. The signals are being used in formulas, called classifiers, to calculate the search result, which is going to be displayed on the user’s screen. 

Google also considers how many sites link to the current web page, do decide its PageRank. If there are lots of high PageRank web pages linking to one page, this can mean, that the current web page has high quality itself. 

Lost of Search Engine Optimization companies are trying to understand how Google’s ranking algorithm works. They are trying to make Google give their web pages higher PageRank, so that the pages can appear or search results’ pages, to drive more traffic to the pages. But Google keeps the algorithm in secret, because it wants to provide searchers with quality web pages. 

Google’s search algorithm is so smart, that it can even fix the spelling errors typed by searchers. If the query has a spelling error, the engine will offer you the right version of the search. Algorithm also is very flexible in working with synonyms and abbreviations. So it works like a human being, not like a machine. 

This is why Google’s search quality team is daily improving its search formulas to help the searchers find what they are looking for in a very short time and not to get disappointed. This is why Google so highly appreciates its engineers for making its services better. And this is why searchers so highly appreciate Google for the perfect content and quality it provides with.
