MSI Application Packaging

July 2nd, 2008

Codenamed ‘Darwin’ the Microsoft Installer bought to the software packaging industry a much needed element of competition. Before the Microsoft Installer (now known as the windows installer) the packaging and distribution of software was dominated by stand alone installation packages from InstallShield and WISE. With the windows installer engine, Microsoft has ensured that the monopoly that InstallShield had when it came to packaging and distribution of software ended. Many other companies have tried unsuccessfully to follow Microsoft’s lead and provide their own packaging and distribution engine. Today windows installer is preferred by all major software manufacturers to distribute their software packages and windows installer is expected to be the most popular packaging engine in coming time.
Windows installer allows end users to customize their installations at run time, in fact windows installer is well known for its high scalability when it comes to developing distribution packages. The basic unit of any windows installer package (MSI package) is a component. A component is comparable to an atom, and it is the building block of any MSI package. Sometimes a corrupt MSI package can be missing important components in which case the installation of the product cannot proceed. Windows installer has an inbuilt mechanism that verifies the contents of each MSI package to ensure that all important components of the package are available before the installation begins.
Similar to an inventory check, the windows installer has a list of all important components and every time an installation is initiated the windows installer checks the ‘manifest’ to ensure that no component is missing. The end user does not have direct access to the components and the windows installer manages the file associations and registration of key files. The key files can be registry components, ODBC connections etc. In a nutshell the windows installer takes care of the installation and registration of files without much user intervention.
In addition to components and key files, an important feature of the windows installer is allowing a user to customize the installation of a MSI package. Features are a group of components and key files that can be removed without effecting the installation of the software. Essential features of software are not customizable and the user cannot choose to not install essential features of a software. For example, during the installation of larger software packages the end user has a choice which features he wishes to install, however during the installation some features are greyed out indicating that they are essential features and the end user has to install them to ensure functioning of the software. Although windows installer is a GUI (Graphical User Interface) based installer, a user can bypass the GUI installation by installing the software in command prompt by executing the file msiexec.exe, such an installation of the software is a called ‘installing the software in quite mode’. Quite mode installations are recommended for expert users only. The most common method of installing windows installer based software is to simply double click on the setup or msiexec.exe file. The windows installer kicks in and the installation of the software can be completed by following the instructions on screen.
The latest version of the windows installer is the windows installer 4.0. Windows installer 4.0 was shipped along with Windows Vista and is expected to offer more features when compared to the current version of windows installer. A big feature of windows installer 4.0 is that it allows installation of software without administrative privileges and the programmer can decide which features of the software can be installed by administrators only. Also the windows installer 4.0 will make use of the restart manager feature of Windows. Instead of restarting the computer every time software is installed, windows installer 4.0 will have the capability of restarting only specific programs thereby eliminating the need for a system reboot. In addition windows installer 4.0 will also clearly mention the programs that are affected by the installation of the MSI package.

Block websites on your computer

July 2nd, 2008

Broadband Internet connectivity is so common these days that almost no one has a second thought about connecting to the Internet. Connecting is easy, but what if you need to control or restrict the ways in which the Internet connection is to be used? Sure enough, widespread availability of unlimited, unmetered Internet connections has its pros. But what about the contras?

Everybody is talking about nowadays how fast their connection is. Fast and unlimited maybe fine for the most home users, but this is not necessarily the same for work or study environments, public places, or specific age groups. The Internet contains enough threats such as spyware and viruses to make you wish to restrict access to certain resources. A virus can corrupt or destroy information on your PC, causing you spending days to recover data. Spyware steals your personal information and slows down your computer’s performance, making it a pain to work on. While it is usually possible to fix a PC contaminated with spyware and viruses, it is much safer and easier to prevent the infection in the first place – by restricting the browsing to the list of known, safe Web sites.

Restrict Internet browsing in Internet Explorer to the defined list of safe Web sites with Ashkon Software WebAllow http://www.weballow.com! WebAllow prevents electronic infections by block access to all but selected preapproved Web sites in Internet Explorer, effectively protecting your computer from spyware and viruses. If a user on your computer tries to access a website that is not on the list of allowed sites, she is redirected to a Web page of your choice to inform her about your access restriction policy.

While viruses and spyware sound familiar enough, Internet threats are not limited to those. The Internet offers a great variety of resources that are not always appropriate for your audience. Online computer games may be fine for the kids, but they can occupy the employees’ attention in an office. Online chats, forums and blogs are popular among students and office employees, occupying their time and taking away from their study or work – wasting valuable time. Finally, while certain Web sites may be appropriate for adults, these same sites are not likely to make you smile when accessed by your children due to coarse language or adult content.

Use WebAllow at home to block all but kid-safe Web sites on your home PC. Use it in the office to prevent your employees wasting their time playing computer games, chatting on the forums or reading breakdown news. Use the same product in the school, college or university to concentrate students’ attention on their study by only allowing access to their online class materials. Install WebAllow in a store or in a library and allow your customers to access your book or product catalog and nothing else. Do not let your computer users misuse Internet connection with WebAllow!

When installed, WebAllow is easy to configure by the administrator, and impossible to disable or uninstall by the regular users. It embeds into Internet Explorer and makes it impossible to visit Web sites other than defined. WebAllow is light on memory and disk space, and is perfect to be used on any computer type from powerful workstations to public computers with small memory and hard drives.

Once configured, WebAllow requires absolutely zero administration and runs completely unattended. WebAllow will improve your personal privacy and computer security, protect your kids, increase employee performance and motivate students. Download evaluation copy for free at http://www.weballow.com/

Quality landing pages to get more sales

July 2nd, 2008

By: SEO and web design agency

When doing or reading about pay per click management you will often ear about your landing pages, but what is it exactly?
A landing page is a specific page on your web site that a visitor will reach after clicking an ad on Google, Yahoo, MSN or any other search engine.
A landing page will often be customized in Pay-Per-Click (PPC) campaigns, as a way to both monitor the effectiveness of paid ads but also as a way to supply copy, images, or other content that is specifically targeted to the advertisement in the campaign.

Without any effective landing page for each ad campaign you undertake, you are just simply and bluntly wasting your money. The ads attract the prospect’s interest, but the landing pages are supposed to pick up where the ad leaves off and lead the prospect to the buying button, the newsletter sign up or any other action that you want them to achieve.

Your landing page has to convince the visitor to stay and buy, read, or fill a form. There are various different ways and thing to do to improve your landing page though, but the key is to keep testing it all the time and of course to monitor the results to make the necessary changes. You should never forget to think all the time about your user and the way they will react when seeing your landing page. This last sentence can actually also be used when doing any SEO on your site.

It appears now that Google’s pricing for AdWords as well as the quality score given include a component that looks at the quality of landing pages and their relevance to the ads and keywords. Before the landing page algorithm was launched, Google used to use the click through rate (CTR) as a way to determine not only what the quality the ad was, but also how good the overall experience for the visitor was.

Unfortunately, advertisers who provided a poor user experiences on the landing page could also write a high quality ad or even worse, a misleading one to promote it, resulting in an ad with a high CTR but poor user experience and most of the time a poor conversion ratio. So by having good landing pages, you will not only increase your amount of sales, but also make savings on your PPC accounts by spending less per click.
Your daily budget will obviously also last longer all through the day resulting in more clicks and once again more sales for you.

Part 2 Basics of PPC Advertising.

July 2nd, 2008

By: Ram.Sharma

PPC, or pay per click, advertising is the most reliable way to purchase guaranteed traffic. You can get a large number of perfectly targeted visitors very quickly using this method of promotion.

PPC ads can be found in the listings of the major search engines, usually in the right margin and labeled “sponsor listings”. Also PPC ads can be delivered from standard Web page content if the Website owner participates in some sort of contextual ad network like Google Adsense.

Setting up a PPC campaign is simple. You must register an account with a publisher or search company and submit your ad in the format of headline and body. After you create your ad you will also need to select the specific keywords you would like your ad to appear for and then bid on these keywords.

In the case of PPC search engine promotion, your ads will only appear when a user searches on the keywords you specify. In the case of PPC ads displayed in standard Web content, your ads will be displayed within articles and blog posts that contain the keywords you have chosen. This formula means you’ll be getting extremely targeted traffic.

You are required to bid a specific amount of money that will be paid for each click your ad receives. Priority is given to the PPC ads with the highest bid amounts.

For instance, you might decide you’ll pay 0.10 for each visitor the PPC program sends you. Advertisers who bid 0.11 or more will have their ad shown higher in the sponsored listings than you, while advertisers who bid 0.09 or less will be lower than you in the rankings.

You will be required to enter your credit or debit card details into the ad system and then fund your advertiser account with an initial deposit.

PPC campaigns will almost always result in lost of traffic. This, of course, means your money will disappear pretty quickly, making the PPC game a little scary for new online marketers.

You can set daily budgets to avoid going broke, but even then your balance can be depleted within a matter of minutes.

Also many PPC providers have stringent terms of service, and it can sometimes be a real pain jumping through hoops to get your ad approved. I admit I’ve never had a problem but I know a lot of folks who have.

The ideal PPC program for a beginner will allow you to:

1. Test the waters without blowing a fortune in the process.

2. Just run your ads without being put under a magnifying glass and having to follow a manual of rules.

I recommend 7search.com for new marketers. This program serves PPC ads through a contextual ad network and on a variety of major search engines so you can get lots of good traffic from a wide variety of sites.

And their pricing is really good because they’re not as advertiser saturated as Google. Plus they have only basic rules in place - as long as you’re not advertising porn, hate, or illegal scams you’re good to go.

As long as you can afford a reasonably competitive bid, you will definitely receive a good flow of traffic from PPC promotion. The only real question is: how long will it take you to tweak your ads and landing pages to the point where you are making sales or getting sign-ups?

This type of advertising requires a great deal of trial and error. If you’re not willing to test your sales page, ad copy, and overall process extensively don’t bother registering a PPC account. The payoffs can be well worth the initial workload, as most good PPC providers allow you to expose your offers to a huge audience of targeted prospects.

Better Software Foundations

July 1st, 2008

I visited the ruins of a Roman settlement, the other day that was set in a lovely valley in the middle of an island.

The setting was idyllic, sheltered from the winds and not too far from the main market town, it seemed an ideal spot to farm and bring up a family.

Its history was thoughtfully provided on signs around the ruins of a substantial dwelling, which had been expanded in Roman times to include a hot and cold bathroom and mosaic floors. All of this was very attractive and a considerable investment for the landowner. But the settlement was abandoned, and it occurred to me that there had to be a good reason since it was clear that someone had put a lot of effort and finance into their dream.

I wondered if Vikings, who were known to be active in this area after the Romans left, had attacked it but there were no signs of charred brick work or the aftermath of battle.

Looking around another sign revealed the problem. There had been more than one attempt to settle the area, but the land formed a natural point of drainage for the hills around, and successive buildings had each eventually succumbed to subsidence.

I was left in no doubt that the buildings were of a good quality and that the builders were competent at construction, but clearly it had taken a few generations to work out that this was not a suitable site for construction. If we really wanted to settle this place now we would drive piles deep into the ground to overcome the subsidence.

The point that this drove into my mind was that of developing software. It is all too often the case that Software development organizations and their customers make the same mistakes over again. If the foundations are shaky then there is no point in building, but with a little forethought someone will could solve the problem and provide a safe way of delivering a good foundation.

The biggest mistake that organizations make is to rush to cut code before they understand the problem they are solving. That doesn’t mean you have to be complacent and that sitting around in a few meetings will solve all your problems.

What should be done is: -

Ring fence what you know.
Ring fence what you don’t know.
Make sure you are developing the right product.
Build the software that you know will not change.
Check that what you are building is what is wanted.

Often the customer just doesn’t know exactly what they want, so you need to involve them in the development process. The earlier they get to know the product then the more likely they are to buy into the solution. Having said all of that..

Code should be built where it enhances the understanding of the problem both to the customer and the developer.

In order to run the Office Communication Server 2007 you will only need one server, provided your deployments are quite small. However, if the geographical distribution is vast and if you are requester as well a fault tolerance, you will need more servers. Overall, the most important difference between OCS 2007 and Live Communication server 2005 is focused on the chore of the most companies: communication. Nowadays, people are more acquainted and resort to the following ways in order to communicate: e-mail, conference, IM, video etc. the question imposed at this point is why so many products should be used for sundry manufactures. 10 Ways to Monetize Your Blog

July 1st, 2008

I’m co-leading a discussion session at Wordcamp about Monetizing Blogs, so I thought I’d also touch on it here with a post about 10 Ways to Monetize Your Blog.

First, I should preface this discussion by saying you first need to seriously evaluate whether you want to work at monetizing your blog. Steve Pavlina has a very thorough post that goes over what’s necessary to really do this well, and why the majority of people who try end up not generating significant income.

Second, you have to make sure that making money from your blog directly is your goal. For example, for this blog direct income isn’t my goal. I didn’t have ads at all untli recently, and the only reason I added them was to use the ad network management application I’ve been working on called RMX Direct. It’s quite possible that your blogging goals may just to network, write about something you’re interested in, or serve some business purpose that isn’t direct income generation.

With that out of the way, let’s get started:

1. Contextual Advertising

Surprise, surprise. Advertising is easily the most popular blog monetization tactic, mostly due to it being the easiest thing to implement. Advertising comes in many forms, and contextual advertising is the most popular due to Google Adsense and it’s general success with blogs and niche sites.

I’m going to assume everyone reading this is familiar with it, but I think it should be mentioned that too many bloggers assume that Adsense is the best solution for their blog. For some blogs and topics it works great, for others, not very well at all.

My advice is to not limit your blog to one ad network or just one form of advertising. Other contextual options include the Yahoo Publisher Network, Chitika, Clicksor, AdSonar, and others. It’s not easy to manually test all these though if you’re shuffling ad tags around and randomly allocating your impressions to them, using a ad network management tool like RMX Direct can help you manage, evaluate, and control your various ad networks.

2. Display Advertising

As I mentioned above, contextual networks aren’t always the best solution for blogs. In some cases there aren’t enough advertisers in niche topics, and in others the users just isn’t likely to click. In this case, you want to be working with ad networks that provide CPM display advertising. This means you get paid something for every ad viewed, opposed to only getting paid per click.

Just like with contextual networks, it’s important to use multiple display ad networks to get more variety from your ads, to not let any one network control your inventory, and to make sure you’re earning the most amount of money possible.

3. Targeted Advertising

The most desirable form of advertising is having companies that wish to pay good rates to advertise on your blog directly whether it’s text or image ads. Many bloggers feel that this is a pipe dream, but I speak from experience from running a wakeboarding blog for many years that you can make solid income from targeted advertising without having insane amounts of traffic.

There are a number of key things you have to do though in order to get this type of advertising:

* Have a blog with leading content in your niche and a professional design
* Create a “media kit” which is essentially a page on your blog that explains that you take targeted advertising, what your rates are, demographics of your users, your traffic levels, examples of the types of ads people can run, testimonials from any companies that have advertised with you, and a phone number and email address they can use to get more information.
* Have obvious “Advertise On This Blog” links in key places on your blog.
* Give a company or two in your niche free or very low-cost advertising in order to get the ball rolling. When advertisers see their competitors or companies similar to them advertising, they get the idea that it’s available. If all they ever see is Adsense ads, they might not realize it’s an option.
* Be willing to be creative to help your advertisers achieve their goals, and lower your price to get the deals.
* Provide statistics and results to your advertisers. Use an ad server like RMX Direct, phpAdsNew, or something similar which has the ability to create reports per advertiser.

Once you’ve set your blog up properly, start approaching companies in your niche who will want to reach your traffic. You don’t need to go after the biggest companies, there are many small companies who are looking to get better results from the web, and they might not even know about your blog. You don’t need to be an ad sales professional, you just need to present your case well on why they’re missing out if they don’t advertise on your traffic. Make it easy on them to work with you, help them create ads, help them determine what sizes to use, and work with them to make sure they get the results they need. It seems like hard work at first, but after you get a solid base of advertisers going, it’s a great source of income and it starts to streamline.

4. Text Link Advertising

Another somewhat unobtrusive form of advertising is using services like Text Link Ads or Adbrite to sell text ads directly to companies. This is pretty low effort and often doesn’t take up too much space on a site, so it’s easy to implement and try out. It should be noted though that you need significant traffic for it to be a big source of income.

5. Affiliate Links

One of the older web monetization methods is still as good today as it’s always been. If you’ve got a blog in a specific area, there’s a very large chance that there are companies out there that sell products or services your users are interested in. You can earn some nice income recommending or linking to those products.

Amazon.com is probably the most common affiliate merchant used by bloggers, but I’d advise finding other unique merchants who may pay better and be more specific to your topic. Amazon is always there as an option, but you’re more likely to get more help from the merchant if you go with a smaller company.

Another nice thing about affiliate links is that they fit well with quality content. Reviewing products and services for your users is valuable content, and if you can make money off it as well it’s a great combination. A word of warning though that you shouldn’t change your reviews or be biased due to the fact you can make money off a referral.

While traffic also helps for affiliate links, it can sometimes be an easier way to generate income without high traffic levels like advertising requires. As an example I did a review of a web analytics application a couple of years ago, and this blog had very little traffic at that point. I referred two sales through that review though that still earn me $150 a month every month two years later.

6. Selling Your Content (Ebooks, Videos, DVDs)

If you’ve got great content, another option is to package it and sell it. There are numerous bloggers who have created ebooks and even real books based on their blog content and made great income selling them. You can also expand to infoproducts like videos, DVDs, audio CDs, and printed books on demand.

This can take some significant work and it requires great content to actually sell, but it can be a nice income stream that lasts a long time.

7. Consulting

Depending on your topic and your level of expertise, you can sell consulting services. If you’re a web analytics expert, you could offer web analytics consulting services on your blog for an hourly fee. This takes very little work to setup beyond creating a page outlining your services, getting a standard contract, and having a way to take payments from companies. Again though, it just takes a little bit of effort to let people know that consulting services are available.

8. Donations

Not quite as common as it once was, it used to be fairly common for bloggers to ask for donations on their blog through Paypal or some other service. This only works if you have a dedicated userbase, and a large enough number of users that their donations add up. I wouldn’t recommend this if you’re also putting a lot of advertising and other monetization methods on your blog. You’ll come off as a bit too greedy in that case.

9. Selling Products

Besides infoproducts, you can sell real products like t-shirts, bumper stickers, clothing, or whatever other kind of merchandise makes sense for your topic. Companies like Goodstorm, CafePress, Lulu, and others make it easy by creating the products based on your design and letting you set up a shop. There is no risk to bloggers, which makes it a great opportunity.

10. Selling Your Blog

Perhaps the most extreme of the blog monetization methods, but it can be lucrative! If you aren’t attached to your blog and are willing to part with it, you can usually find a buyer for it. Your blog must be pretty good, and have a level of traffic worth buying, and it really helps if you already have some income streams going for it. Blogs usually sell for 12-24 times monthly revenues, and there are numerous places you can sell them like eBay and the Sitepoint Marketplace.

Conclusion

It definitely takes some work to monetize your site well, and having good traffic really helps out. Work on building a blog with a solid userbase, and you should be on your way to generating income using any of the methods above. Good luck, and please share any blog monetization experiences you have in the comments.

Scope of SEO in India

June 30th, 2008

SEO which is commonly known as Search Engine Optimization is meant to increase the visibility of the website. For a commercial website it means a lot. If your website is not getting traffic, means that website is not getting visitors and it directly means that website is not able to sale any thing. Just because a website is not getting visitor it won’t be able to fulfill the desire of its owner.

Hence, a website is always requiring visitors and for that we will have to do the search engine optimization of that website, so that visitors can come to the website and we can convert them into customers.

When I first started doing search engine optimization in year 2004, the term SEO was not well known to me. I was not at all aware from it. Like me, there were so many people around me who even don’t know what is the word SEO means. Even today some people asks me is it Senior Executive Officer, as if CEO means Chief Executive Officer.

Hence we can say that SEO is not a well known term in India even today, but yes after three years I can see a huge difference. Most of the people who are using internet for any means are a bit aware from it. A few years ago, there were so many people who are not even aware from websites. Then comes the world of net banking, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank etc. played a huge role in increasing the role of internet in common people. Also social network sites like Orkut played an important role in increasing the usability of internet in India.

Now an era has arrived when people are looking for there own websites, and they are also aware from the fact that it should have good visibility too. Hence, demand of website design and development and SEO is increasing day by day. As the number of websites will increase demand for SEO will also increase. Hence, I can see a good prospect of search engine optimization in India in near future.

Also from the market point of view, work of SEO is quite costly in western countries, and it is quite cheaper in India. Hence, people are use to outsource there work to India. They use to take work from there and then outsource it to India so that they can get the work done in a cheaper rate, and they can get good cost for it. Hence, scope of SEO in India in near future is quite good.

EasyCGI Web Hosting Features

June 30th, 2008

Introduction

Easy CGI has a superior intuitive site, which provide potential clients with easier access to ordering information. They also offer the most unique product offerings. They offer Coldfusion, ASP, and even the new ASP.net technologies. Besides web hosting they also offer co-location, which shows that they are no small player.

If you need Windows 2000 hosting, the average provider will charge you around $20 or more per month with a setup fee. Easy CGI is an exception to that, with Windows 2000 hosting accounts starting at $7.96 per month. It comes with 3 GB of space and 50 GB of traffic. For storage, we have not found a company offering more. For Windows web hosting, Easy CGI is a very solid choice.

Price and Cost Effectiveness

Easy CGI was founded in 1998 and located in New York. Over the years, they have expanded their product offerings. They offer the most comprehensive Windows web hosting package we have ever seen. Their packages all come with ASP, MS Access and access to a shared ssl certificate. Plus they were the first company we have seen to offer ASP.net to the public. They also offer plenty of flexibility to their web hosting plans. You can add MsSQL and Coldfusion at any time.

Control Panel

One of the greatest weaknesses in this company is their control panel. Easy CGI’s control panel is very limited in what it is able to do. For one, it lacks much of the advanced features that are otherwise found in other control panels such as web creation tools, setting directories as CGI readable, etc. Their control panel is very basic, in that it only includes mailbox editing, and billing information. Rather than using a professional control panel software package with lots of features, they decided to make their own which is very basic. However, if you do not plan to use a control panel, then this should not matter. It does have all the basic functions, just nothing more and the interface needs some tweaking.

Data Center

We were unable to obtain much information about their date center. We do know though that they operate a data center and it is located in the same building as their corporate headquarters. This means they can easily solve problems if they were to occur

Customer Relations

EasyCGI has improved their customer service dramatically over the past few years. With their vast years of experience in the industry, all of their service professionals have sufficient knowledge in the products they sell. You can ask them anything about the packages and they will answer promptly without hesitation. When we asked about Windows web hosting including version numbers of software and whether or not it would support our Windows ASP application, they were able to provide competent answers. EasyCGI also provides extended support hours from 9 to 5 six days a week.

Conclusion

All in all, Easy CGI is a viable web hosting provider. It offers everything one would expect in web hosting company. Even though they have a much weaker control panel than most web hosting companies, they offer consumers a great value in web hosting and they have above average technical support. They are definitely a choice to consider when you are seeking for a Windows web hosting provider or if you need a lot of storage space.

Joomla templates, redesign your site in a few steps

June 30th, 2008

Joomla! is the latest buzzword in the IT world today. So what exactly is it? Joomla is a Content Management System that has a host of powerful online applications and also helps you in building websites. Joomla allows web designers as well as end-users to effortlessly and easily maintain and manage a dynamic website despite having little or no knowledge or proficiency of the code. This powerful content management system is controlled by a CSS stylesheet and one single XHTML document. Joomla gives the user total creative control over the appearance of the website by availing of the many Joomla templates available. Best of all, you don’t have to pay thousands of dollars to avail of this award-winning software. Joomla is available free-of-charge for anybody to download.

How Joomla! templates help
With Joomla you won’t ever again need to hire a web designer for huge sums of money. You can choose a free Joomla template from the many available and build your own website or upgrade your existing one for free, and all this in less time than you ever thought possible. All it takes is a click of a button for you to change your website into a text editor right in the browser itself. With Joomla templates you can easily add new pages and add or edit pictures, menus and text as well as video and audio, then click the “Save” button and you’re done! That’s all it takes for you to design or re-design your own website- literally at the click of your fingers!!

What are Joomla! templates?
A Joomla template functions as a basic foundation design within the Joomla Content Management System. You could use a pre-made Joomla template or custom-make Joomla template for total creative control over the appearance of the website and presentation of the content. The Joomla template is designed so that when you insert your content, it inherits the colors, text size, navigation, link styles and menus of the template, giving your content a completely new look.

One of the advantages of Joomla is that flash joomla templates can be easily and instantly applied to give your website a totally new look. The graphics, positioning and colors can be altered without any change in content. Joomla templates that use CSS or cascading style sheets help to produce layouts without having to use tables. The advantage of this is it is easier to validate the template code to the standards of the World Wide Web Consortium and it also does better in search engines, loads faster and is easier to maintain.

How to create a Joomla! template
There are plenty of joomla template tutorials available online for all those who are intimidated at the thought of using Joomla to re-design their website. Go ahead and avail of a joomla video tutorial for a first-hand look at how to build joomla template as well as the many ways to use it.

Most online tutorials give you step-by-step explanations and instructions on all aspects of joomla including:
•What is a joomla template, how it works and the difference between a template with and without content.
•Components of a template and the functions they perform.
•The unique process of designing an active web page as opposed to a static (X)HTML web page.
•How to build joomla template.
•How to use a pre-made joomla template as well as how to custom-make joomla template to suit your own individual preferences.
•How to create layouts using the innovative cascading style sheets instead of conventionally used tables.
•Joomla’s table-less design and its implications with regards to the World Wide Web Consortium standards.
•How to style modules and place them as well as new techniques and tricks for rounded corners, variable page widths and text resizers.

Outsourcing web design

June 28th, 2008

By: John Danielson

The trend of outsourcing web design, software development and Internet marketing projects or part of IT departments activities gained an extreme popularity in the e-commerce domain - even if you are a small or middle size company you can easily gain benefits outsourcing.Case: A customer want your proposal on a web site development and that’s what you do best - except for an element of the project - you are not proficient in this specific web technology. But this element is required to win this contract. What should you do in this case? A dead end: you can’t lose this contract but its unacceptable for you to hire a new employee. Or another scenario, when you need some programming for your own site but can’t spare any time to it at all. Its best for you to focus on your core competencies that generate revenue for you.So much technology, so much competition.Web development is an immense domain with multiple technologies involved - hardly a small development company is able to encompass everything. However, without qualified designers and developers ensuring omni-faceted expertise, it will be almost impossible for small firms to win contracts due to a lack of required expertise. The very idea of outsourcing projects or project components may be formidable for the bulk of small operators, but consider this opportunity as a ticket to the bright future of your company. What should be outsourced?A small web design and development company can get seasoned in particular areas - and these are your strong suit that should be operated, the rest can be outsourced. How to point out the tight spots in your development processes? If graphics and design for web sites is one of your challenges, then to outsource that work may be the sole way out. But paying $80 per hour to graphic artist is too much taking into account that you charge only $50 an hour, but you should look at it from the other side:Customer wishes a Flash element created and Flash isn’t your shot and you don’t know how long the implementation will take, even approximately, and you have agreed the total project price. You stipulated 6 man-hours for Flash animation - so at a rate of $50 per hour, it will cost you $300 to implement. Even if third party designer charges $80 per hour, it can take him only 2 hours to develop, plus consultation with external designer and total $210. So, you saved almost a hundred dollars and stayed ahead saving time for other projects or elements. If you are dedicated to web design but also responsible for accounting of your business, then you are probably lose your money. Its much cheaper to contract bookkeepers’ services. If you have free time to manage your finances it would be better and more efficient to spend it submitting tenders and marketing your business.

Ajax and Web Development - What you Should Know

June 28th, 2008

Lately, you may have been hearing more and more about Ajax and begun to wonder how it could be beneficial to your business’s web application development projects. First, it is important to start with an understanding of this type of web programming. While the concept is not new - it has existed since 1998 - the term did not come into being until February 2005, when Jesse James Garrett coined it as a way to shorten the combination of three technologies that he was going to be using for web application development: Asynchronous JavaScript and XML. This recent phrasing may partially explain why Ajax programming has become such a hot concept for businesses to explore.

Today, Ajax is being used in web application development by many major players on the web, including Google, which pioneered its use in a mainstream manner with its Google Maps service, as well as many web-based email systems. This is as a direct result of the updating of computer technology in general - today’s average computer user has a faster network connection, a faster machine, and a higher level of computer knowledge than those that used computers ten years ago, opening the door for more complex technologies to be used by a wider array of websites. On the other hand, web programming using Ajax is not necessary for a site to be successful; sites such as Amazon and eBay, which are clearly doing well in the business arena, are either not using this form of web programming at all or are using it sparingly.

Still, web programming with Ajax has quickly been incorporated into web application development as a new style.

The Basics of Web Programming with Ajax
At its core, Ajax web programming enables a web application development team to create a site that allows users to perform certain functions without the need for redrawing or reloading an entire screen. For example, Google Maps allows users to scroll through a map seamlessly - a technique so revolutionary that it was later adopted by other map sites such as MapQuest and Yahoo Maps. Web-based Email programs using Ajax web programming allow users to open a message without reloading their entire interface. Sites that allow voting or rating, such as Netflix and YouTube, let users click on an array of stars to rate a film or video without ever leaving the initial screen. And even shopping sites such as Gap.com use Ajax programming to give users the feel of a true virtual shopping cart - users place items into their cart without leaving the product page.

In addition, web programming with Ajax can be used to create what are known as “mashups” - situations where content from two different web applications can be combined into a third, newly useful application. For example, the apartment listings from Craigslist were crossed with Google Maps to create a site that allows users to see apartment locations on the map.

Benefits of Using Ajax for Web Application Development
Web programming with Ajax offers a business several key benefits in its web application development. It offers site developers an extra level of innovation that can make a site easier to use for all visitors. When implemented correctly, Ajax will also give users the feeling that a web application is more responsive than a traditional web site. It can also allow a business to give its site new functionality and new services to be used by partners or clients. Finally, it simply can give parity to a business. Competitors may already be using Ajax on their sites, and it may be in a business’s best interest to have its web application development team implement Ajax on its own site as well. Customers may also be asking for the new services if they have seen them on other competitor sites. However, there are many things to be careful of when implementing web programming with Ajax as well. While it does seem like the latest thing, a business should not go overboard in its use during web application development. Primarily, this type of web programming can make a site more difficult for visitors to use. The web is at its core a very user-friendly system, but Ajax can introduce new behaviors that people may not be ready for or may be confused by. This can cause visitors to leave your site quickly, without actually performing the tasks, making the purchases, or reading the information that you had provided. Ajax programing can also create a host of other problems with which businesses should be concerned.

How to Pick a Paypal Scam Email

June 28th, 2008

How to Pick a Paypal Scam Email
by Rev. David B. Smith
Ever since I started encouraging people to take out Paypal subscriptions to support my ezine, I’ve had lots of questions along the lines of “Can Paypal be trusted?” and “How do I know that they are not going to empty my account?”

Well, the simple answer to these questions is that Paypal are the biggest and the best in online eCommerce, and as far as I know they are completely trustworthy. For the same reason though, they are constantly being targetted by scammers worldwide, who will email you, pretending to be representatives of Paypal.

I get one to two Paypal scam emails per day, so if you haven’t received any yet, you’ve been lucky. You can’t avoid getting them. The trick is to recognise them as you receive them, and consign them without hesitation to the virtual dustbin.

Let me give you a simple four-point checklist by which you can pick the scam emails, and then I’m going to show you a video where I actually open a few scam emails to illustrate the same points.

Here’s Father Dave’s checklist:

Does the email come from Paypal.com? If so, in my case, it’s a scam email. I’m in Australia, so if I get a genuine communication from Paypal it will be from Paypal.com.au. If you’re in Brittain it will be from Paypal.com.uk, etc. This is no help if you’re based in the US but you get the idea.

The subject lines have a familiar ring. Admittedly, this assumes that you’ve seen Paypal scam emails before, but believe me, once you’ve seen a dozen, you’ve seen them all! ‘Flagged Account’ is a favourite subject line. ‘Urgent Security Measures’ is another. ‘A new email has been added to your account’ is a third. After a while, you can pick them.

The email does not address you by name. Even if the first two criteria aren’t much help to you, this is an absolutely sure-fire indicator. When Paypal write to you they always address you by name. When scammers write to you they don’t use your name because they don’t know it. But they want to know it, or more particualrly your account details.

The link does not take you to Paypal.com. This is of course the crucial difference. If you follow the link in the scam email, you’ll be taken to a site that has been made up to look like the Paypal site, but is entirely designed to prize your account details from you! Sometimes they use html code to create a linking text in the email that contains a genuine Paypal URL! This is very sneaky! You can always check the real URL in the status bar (if you’re not sure what I’m talking about here, see the video).
The bottom line is that, if you think you have received an email from the real Paypal, go to your account independantly of the possible-scam email and see if there are any messages attached to your account. The real Paypal will do this.

If, after finding no notices attached to your account, you still feel it might be a genuine email, contact Paypal yourself! You email them. They’ll tell you if the email was genuine.

Everything you need to know to find a good shared web host

June 27th, 2008

A good, shared Web host must provide reliable and reasonable quality of service. Many times, a consumer will sign up with the least expensive provider only to experience many technical difficulties and the inevitable and frustrating experience of changing Web hosts. To avoid this experience, it is best if the consumer chooses the right hosting company. Ensuring that a shared Web hosting firm has the following characteristics will increase the probability of consumer satisfaction.

Quality Server Technology The use of quality server technology is important. Since shared hosting services utilize multiplexed equipment, consumers must ensure that the server and server technology used can accommodate the number of users on your particular server.

System Administrators Make sure that knowledgeable system administrators are operating your hosting company’s technology.

Network Redundancy Your shared hosting package must have multiple connections to the Internet. Network redundancy ensures that if one Internet connection goes down, traffic can be re-routed through another connection.

Network Connectivity It is important to find the fastest Internet connection possible. Since you are competing with other users for resources in a shared hosting environment, you should ensure that you have at least T3 connection that is using less than 50 per cent of available bandwidth.

You should also consider the following factors before selecting any type of shared hosting solution for your Web site. By considering these factors, you will save money in the long run by selecting a solution that grows with your business.

Purchase only what you need Select a Web hosting solution that corresponds with your business needs. Only purchase services that your site will require to provide your specific content. Don’t sign up for an all-inclusive account with a hosting firm if you won’t use most of their services. This will unnecessarily increase your costs.

Select a scalable solution Make sure that your hosting solution can grow as your site grows in complexity. Ensure that you can upgrade your site to accommodate increased bandwidth and other demanding resource requirements such as server-side scripting, database support and multimedia streaming.

Find prompt tech support Only use a host that provides prompt and knowledgeable customer care. A dependable host should offer 24×7 toll-free technical support rendered by experienced and professionally trained technicians.

Check references Before you commit to a particular hosting firm, ask for references. Make sure to canvass other webmasters running sites with similar specifications. Browse their Web sites and measure response times at both peak and non-peak periods.

Watch your billing and keep your receipt Many hosting firms are notorious for their horrid billing practices. Check your credit card statements to ensure that you are not being overcharged or billed at an incorrect frequency. Most purchases occur online, so make sure to print out your receipt. Most companies will require you to remit that receipt by fax in order to cancel.

Back up all your data Do not depend on your host to recover any data you publish on the Web. Most hosting firms are only equipped to recover files in the event of a system failure. Ensure that you have a copy of any data that you post to the Web on your own hard drive.

Own your own domain Make sure that your Web host will not hold you hostage to their service by exercising administrative control over your domain name. Your host should only be listed as a technical contact. You should exercise administrative control over the domain name from the point of purchase.

Do extensive background research Find out whether a host is real or whether it resells hosting solutions. Also check what payment processor the host uses to run credit card transactions. Determine who owns the hosting company and whether they possess the technical expertise required to run it effectively. All of these factors impact upon the credibility and reliability of the host and the services you provide your customers.

Obtain assurances You should obtain assurances concerning service quality before you sign up for hosting services. A quality Web host should assure some form of service quality and compensation if you experience an interruption in service.

Understand your obligations Before you sign up with a Web host, you must understand what your obligations are concerning payment for service and permissible behavior. Certain hosting companies will not permit high traffic content, such as adult material. Other hosting companies will permit such content, but only if a special hosting service package is selected.

Establish an exit strategy Always have a backup plan in case your host goes belly-up or experiences an unrecoverable failure. Redundancy should always be a priority if you are running an Internet-based business. Remember that any service outage can completely compromise your source of income.

Tips To Increase Website Traffic

June 27th, 2008

All websites need visitors to be successful, but just getting any old traffic isn’t enough. To be really successful, you need targeted traffic (eg. visitors come to your website with the intention of buying, or performing a specific action like subscribing to your list).

To increase targeted website traffic, careful planning is needed. Simply getting your website into the search engines isn’t enough these days. Neither is buying a ton of email addresses and hoping enough people respond to an email blast. Those days are long gone.

Optimizing your website for search engines using the correct keywords is crucial. You want visitors to find your website after searching on the most important keywords related to your website.

Learn to use keyword research tools to find the most relevant keywords. This is very important. If you do not own a software tool like Ad Word Analyzer or have a membership to Wordtracker, then I suggest you use the Keyword Tool inside Google AdWords.

Make good use of meta tags with keywords in the page title and description. You also need to use these same keywords are on your web pages. Just don’t go overboard here. Make your pages look ‘natural’ and keep the theme of your website content consistent.

Google and other search engines main goal is to display the most relevant search results for a given search term by ranking websites that have a tight theme relevance across the entire site.

If you set your website up the right way, when search engines find your website, they will know it is worth listing and index it right away.

Now, you may consider adding a blog to your website to feed the search engines more content. Blog posts gets indexed quickly (search engines love them), so posting to a blog as often as possible is a great way to increase targeted web site traffic.

Likewise, RSS feeds are helpful too. RSS lets people know about the latest updates without them needing to seek out the information. Plus, since the content changes each and every day, you can count on receiving more frequent visits from search engine spiders.

Getting links to your website is also important. However, don’t go requesting them randomly all over the place. Choose websites that relate to your content as Google factors that in these days. Once again, focus on the theme of your website and choose link partners accordingly.

Optionally, quality links can also be gained from writing and submitting articles to websites like EzineArticles.com. There is even software to submit your aticles to hundreds of article directories in a matter of minutes.

Writing an article related to your website’s content will result in more visitors to your website and a nice boost in link popularity. This is one of the easiest and most affordable strategies you can do to get better results.

In summary, the key to succeeding in this new age of search falls on quality. Websites that provide useful and relevant content will succeed. Those webmasters that cut corners will most likely end up nowehere to be found in the search results.

If you want to build a perfectly-structured, highly-optimized website or revamp your existing website, there is a new software tool that recently came out called SiloMatic.

SiloMatic makes sure all of your web pages are properly structured to rank high on Google and other major search engines. It will also link all the web pages correctly to prevent theme bleeding, which is vital for top rankings.

Online Advertising PPC Pay Per Click – More Cash, More Customers

June 27th, 2008

Pay per click advertising is an ingenuous tool for companies looking for the easy way towards Internet popularity. For those who have had no luck in search engine optimization or who do not want to be hassled with the entire process, it is far easier to go directly to the search engines themselves and try online advertising PPC.

In this method of advertising, the online company or webpage pays the Google or Yahoo! to get to the top of the search list. There is an agreement that every time a surfer types a word or a phrase that matches that of the company’s, their name and link is at the very first page, either in the same format. It is like those found in the main search list or as colored ads that are attractive to Internet users. At this point in online advertising PPC, when a person actually ‘clicks’ and accesses the website, payment is generated for the search engine.

This may be off-putting for smaller companies since their advertising budget may easily run out in the process – but keep in mind that the more people visit, the greater the chance that they will purchase. Just remember to make sure that the online advertising PPC process is in order and will result to optimization for the company. It is like finding good keywords for the search process, directing potential customers to the direct and helpful portion of the company website (to lessen their boredom or disinterest) and tracking the success by experimenting on the search process on engines. By monitoring and organizing these factors, there is greater chance that more people will visit, and will translate to more money in the long run.

Better Software Foundations

June 27th, 2008
